THE NIGHT OF THE PARTY . . .
You zipped up the back of your velvet green dress with a look of finality. When you adjusted the skirt of it, you looked at your reflection in the mirror. At first, you felt a surge of relief - you felt beautiful. Stunning, even. The emerald green dress that mimicked an old fashioned evening gown complimented the shape of your torso perfectly. The sleeves billowed out with elegance, but the cuffs were snug on your forearms. The skirt flowed from your waist down to your calves with a regal and graceful movement. It made the delicately crafted curls of your (h/c) hair radiate.
But when you looked closer, you could hear Liam's comments flare in your mind. You turned sideways and frontways again, finding all the flaws you had always hated glaring back at you through the glass.
You sighed in defeat, taking up your purse and coat in your arms and leaving your apartment. You pulled out your keys and locked the door, fumbling nervously as you prepared yourself to face Liam in the lobby downstairs. He had texted about fifteen minutes ago to let you know he was here waiting to take you to Stark Tower.
As you descended the stairs, you thought back to your appearance and the sudden change of confidence you had felt.
For just one night, why can't I feel beautiful?
When you stepped off the last stair, you looked up and saw Liam's silhouette by the front door. Your stomach twisted in knots at the sight of him. Your nerves suddenly roared with an unfathomable strength through your body. You almost wanted to turn around and leave him there and find another route to the tower. Your heels clicked echoingly across the lobby and you found yourself trying to step lighter, trying to remain out of his vision for a moment longer.
Before you reached him, you glanced down at your ensemble. Were your legs too exposed? Did the neck-line plunge too much? It was hardly past your collar-bones. Perhaps you should have worn an ankle-length gown; maybe then Liam would refrain from touching you so much.
All of these concerns came to an abrupt halt when Liam turned to face you. When his gaze met yours, you froze a few feet away from him. He pulled his hands from his pockets and donned that boyish grin - but now, after all this time, it changed before your eyes. The boyish facade had faded. It was now a devilish, cunning grin that made your spine shiver. When his eyes flicked away from yours and glided slowly downward until he had taken in your entire body, you wanted to scream. You wanted to call him out on it, call him every name under the sun.
