And so they went to McDonalds.
And played on the playground.
And had fun.
Alice knew that breaking up with someone you loved would be hard, but when she was with Max, it was like the world faded to blurred colors and he was the only thing in focus.
She still had a slight crush in Cade, but just maybe she was getting over it.
Maybe.
A few fans had asked for autographs, said apologies for Cade, and, of course, screamed.
On their way back home, Max took a left where they were supposed to go right.
"Uh, where're we going?"
"It's a secret."
"Oh."
He chuckled and kept on driving.
Alice was confused, but once she saw the blinding lights of concession stands, quirky and cliché fair rides, along with a few clowns, she knew that they were at a fair.
She looked at Max and smiled. "A fair, really?"
"Of course. Girls just gotta have fun, right?"
"Yah."
He took her hand and led her to a ticket booth, getting them both passes for all the rides, so they can ride as many rides as many times as they want.
They went to the game booths first, at Alice's request, and hadn't won anything yet.
Until they came across a water gun game.
"Max! Can we play that?!?!"
"Ugh, okay." He said in a jitterish and nervous tone.
But she put it off, thinking he needed to go to the bathroom.
They each took a place at a gun and pointed them at the little targets.
When the carny rang the start bell, they both let out a weird battle cry.
The winner bell went off and they looked at the carny, who pointed at Max.
"Aww."
Max looked at Alice, who was sulking. He elbowed her in the ribs and asked, "Which on do you want?"
She gasped.
"You're really giving it to me?"
"Mhmm." He nodded.
She squealed, hugged him, and pointed to a blue dolphin on the top row at the same time.
The man gave it to her and she hugged it to her body.
As they walked away from the booth, Max asked, "Whatcha gonna name it?"
"Leroy."
"Leroy the dolphin?"
"Yah."
"Okay."
They ride a few rides and then Max took Alice's hand, leading her to the ferris wheel.
"Why the wheel?
"Well it is the wheel of fortune, right?"
She giggled and nodded, sitting across from Max
As they went up, she looked out across the horizon.
The sun was setting, painting the sky in hues of blues, reds, and oranges.
"It's beautiful." She whispered.
"It is."
Once they reached the top, the ride stopped and Max looked at Alice.
"Can I, um, tell you something?"
"Yeah..."
"Um, you know how we went to the same school this year?"
"Yeah..."
"Well. I've kindasortahadacrushonyousinceschoolstarted."
"What's that?"
"I kinda sorta had a crush on you since school started..."
She stared at him.
"Why would you like me of all people?"
"Why wouldn't I? You're beautiful, your voice is beautiful, everything about you is... beautiful."
"No it's not. I'm messed up, I'm overweight, I have crap hair, I can't even keep a boyfriend for a day goddamnit."
He looked at her.
"Was he really your boyfriend?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Of course, this is where she started to cry.
"Did he ever hold you close at night? Did he ever tell you he loved you? Did he ever hole your hand and look you straight in the eyes, before kissing you breathless?"
"No. Cos I was a crap girlfriend."
"You were together for one day."
She looked away from him, wanting the ride to start back up so she could get away from Max.
"I guess what I'm trying to say is, you do deserve someone better than him, better than me. But please, at least give me a chance."
She looked back at him and smiled lightly.
He wiped her tears away with his fingers and hugged her.
"Thank you."
