Chapter Ten: I woke up in my own bed the next day. I didn't know what time it was but when I drew back the curtains of my bed, I saw that the room was completely empty. I looked at the chair next to my bed, and saw my school clothes folded up perfectly. Suddenly the whole night before came back to me. I blushed, trying to remember who the figure that had brought me inside and dressed me was, but it just wouldn't come to me. I sighed and looked at the clock next to me, jumping when I saw that I had already missed the first four classes of the day and I had only ten minutes to get to the Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson.

I quickly jumped up and got dressed, sliding my books into my bag. I ran down the hallway and into the classroom, panting loudly. I looked up, expecting to see Professor Lockheart sitting at his desk and the whole class in their seats. Instead, there was a man with a scar on his face, he was rather attractive despite this.

The whole room had been changed around and the class was empty. He glanced up wearily at me from his book, then his eyes widened.

I looked at the board that said “Professor Lupin,” then I looked back at the new man with a scowl. I scooted my way backwards with him watching me intently.

“Hello. I'm Professor Lupin. The new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.” he said politely.

I nodded at him, but said absolutely nothing. I still couldn't speak. He sat at the desk and we watched each other for a while.

“You're early.” he noted.

I just nodded again. After five minutes, people began to make their way into the classroom. All of them gave both me and the new professor evil glares, yet the Lupin man smiled at every single person who came in the door. Oliver was the last person to walk into the class. He walked in next to Ebony Greengrass, the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team, and I instantly hated myself for the pang of jealousy I felt. He glanced over at me sympathetically. I had to hide my face in my hands so that no one could see the hatred.

“Hello class. My name is Professor Lupin.” he said, still as polite as ever.

“What happened to Lockheart?” called out Ginny Weasley.

She had a crush on Lockheart and she was always flirting with him during class.

“Well, he wont be back for a while. Never, actually. Anyhow, onto more important matters. You will all learn, very quickly, that I prefer to do practical work than theory. And, I'd like to give you all a fun first lesson, so today we're gonna be practising the Riddikulus charm.”

People around the class started to turn and whisper to each other. I just sat there, my face buried in my arms.

“Quiet, quiet. Now, can I have a volunteer? No.. okay, you in the back.” he said.

I waited to hear the noise of someone walking to the front, but after there was nothing I looked up to see everyone staring at me. I huffed and stood up, trudging towards the front of the class where he stood.

“In that cupboard there is a boggart. On the count of three, I'll open the door and the thing you fear most will come out. Now, I need you to think of a happy memory, the strongest one you have and then you have to yell Riddilkulus. Got it?”

I nodded slowly, worrying about what might come out of the cupboard. Then he opened the cupboard and out came the most disturbing thing I have ever seen. It was a black shape that slowly morphed into a twisted bloodied corpse, the corpse of my own brother, then the corpse morphed again. Now it was Oliver's body I was staring at. There was dried blood stained on his face and his wand was lying on the floor next to him. He was dead. The body stayed the same but the face kept changing. Seamus. Fred. George. Then back to Cedric again.

I was completely frozen in fear.

I had no idea what to do, so I turned and ran out of the door as quickly as I could. I let my legs take me to my usual spot opposite the portrait of Barnabas the Barmy. I held my head in my hands, hoping that if I sat there for long enough I would eventually fade into the wall. Suddenly, a loud voice came at me from the left.

“Miss Diggory. My office. Now.”

I stood up and followed him down to his office, dropping into the chair I sat in when I was last there.

“Why aren't you in class Alexis?” Snapes voice resonated throughout the room, although it seemed different. Softer than I had ever heard it.

I was so shocked by the change that I found myself unable to think of an answer, so instead I simply shook my head.

“Alexis, if you don't answer me right now, then you'll have to be issued with a punishment.” he leaned forward onto the desk, clasping his hands together.

No matter how much I wanted to answer, I just couldn't bare the thought of saying anything. Of accidentally letting slip just how weak I am without Oliver.

“Miss. Diggory.” I could tell that he was starting to get annoyed, as his voice was increasing in volume. “Miss. Diggory, if you do not answer me, I will ensure that you don't play quidditch for the rest of the school year.”

I bit my lip, weighing in my head whether or not I would be able to survive a whole year without it. When I had decided I shook my head once more.

It was at that point that he seemed to realise there was absolutely no way he could pry any information out of me.

“Why won't you answer me? Can you at least tell me that?” he seemed to soften right up again.

I shrugged, looking at my hands as I played with my fingers absent-mindedly. He stood up, making his way around the desk. He stopped right in front of my chair, kneeling down so that his face was in direct line with my eyesight. His eyes had a look about them that was so caring, I don't think I had ever seen anyone look like that. Suddenly my heart beat a little faster and I was suddenly blinking furiously to stop the tears that were pricking at the back of my eyes from escaping. However, despite my best efforts tears started streaming down my face, and I found myself crying in the presence of Severus Snape.
