A cliche story.
Pages being turned, pencils scratching against paper, the humming of air conditioners, those were the sounds Jongin listened to while he waited for Kyungsoo. He cast a glance at the clock hanging on the wall, 1:50pm, and time kept on ticking. Jongin huffed, classes ended a while ago, but his best friend hadn't shown up. Jongin couldn't help but worry a little, he was never late.
He yawned and placed his head on his folded arms on the table, slowly dozing off – he never did make a habit of using extra time to study. Jongin was shaken out of his nap not five minutes later.
"Jongin!" Kyungsoo whisper-shouted, earning them dirty looks from the people nearby.
Said boy lifted his hand and rubbed his eyes. "Hey..." came his groggy greeting.
The boy sat down facing Jongin. "I have something to tell you," he said excitedly.
Jongin could see the huge grin plastered on his face and knew it was good news. He perked up and gave a slight smile of his own. "What is it?"
Kyungsoo balled up his fists in excitement before he collected himself and took a deep breath, placing his hands flat on the table. He exhaled and said 'He asked me out'. The next second had him grinning again and covering his face with his hands to hide the redness in his cheeks, missing the way Jongin's smile faltered for a split second.
When Kyungsoo put his hands down again Jongin smiled brightly at him.
"I'm happy for you, Kyungie."
Jongin lay on his bed and stared blankly at his ceiling, a little while after Kyungsoo had left his house.
A few hours ago his friend had told him that he was finally dating the guy he had been crushing on for years, and he had looked so happy about it that it crushed Jongin. Crushed him that another guy was making Kyungsoo so happy.
The reveal was an emotional rollercoaster for Jongin. He was delighted that Kyungsoo was getting the happiness that he so deserved, but at the same time he felt absolutely miserable because of the reason for that happiness.
He liked Kyungsoo, frankly, he still does. Kyungsoo was his crush but he was not Kyungsoo's. He now understands why the word 'crush' is used to describe a feeling of attraction towards a person, it perfectly describes how he felt at the end of his emotional ride at the library earlier and right at this moment in the confines of his room – completely crushed. At least Kyungsoo's love story had ended well.
Despite all the different emotions, he was angry. Not at Kyungsoo, not at his new boyfriend, not at anyone – but himself. He was angry that he didn't like the news even though he said so, that he had lied to Kyungsoo in his face, that he hadn't dared to make a move while he had the chance, he was angry that he allowed himself to feel dejected at Kyungsoo's newfound happiness. He was ashamed.
