Kyungsoo's heart breaks whenever Jongin says that he likes children as long as it was not HIS.
-
It had been two years since Jongin had gone back to his hometown; it was two years too long honestly. If it was only for Jongin, he wouldn't dare come back to his hometown, he worked hard to get away from that place but there was that one person that always made him come back.
Kyungsoo, his best friend, his confidant... his savior.
Kyungsoo had saved him in more ways than one. Jongin had a shitty life, his mother had him at a young age, she regretted having him and she never failed to spit it to his face every waking day. Jongin wanted to give up so many times but each time Kyungsoo was there to pull him up and make him feel that someone still cares for him.
They met when they were still kids at a park nearby their houses. Jongin was older by a year to Kyungsoo but that doesn't stop their friendship. Jongin maybe older but at times, most especially whenever his mom had just hit him, Jongin would whine like a child and love whenever the Kyungsoo would comfort him. Jongin doesn't know how he'll survive each year, if Kyungsoo wasn't by his side.
Jongin worked hard to get a scholarship to a college in Seoul, that way he would be miles away from his abusive mother and absentee father. He was delighted to receive the acceptance letter and thankfully his mother didn't do anything to stop him from leaving, in fact his mother wished for him to never show his face in front of her again and Jongin was more than happy to oblige.
The only downside to all of this was that he would be far away from Kyungsoo. But Kyungsoo was proud of him, for getting the scholarship and having a start to chase his own dream. Kyungsoo's parents, who were more a parents to Jongin than his own, even gave him a graduation and farewell party. Jongin promised to visit them whenever he could.
And so here he was, two years later... standing outside the Do's residence with a wide grin on his face. He barely talked to Kyungsoo in that two years because of his college schedule, plus his part time job was also consuming his time and that was why he miss the younger so much.
Tonight was Kyungsoo's graduation dinner; he contacted Kyungsoo's parents to advise them of his planned surprise to his bestfriend. He would have attended Kyungsoo's graduation itself but something came up at his part time job and he had to push his travel back a few hours.
It was Kyungsoo's dad who opened the door when he knocked and the older was masking the same grin on his face when he saw Jongin. Apparently, Kyungsoo was mildly sulking the whole day because Jongin didn't make it. He and Kyungsoo had talked about it, that he won't be able to attend his graduation... Kyungsoo said it was okay and that he understood but that didn't stop him from expecting Jongin to somehow show up and surprise him but the ceremony ended and no Jongin showed up and now Kyungsoo's mood was a bit off.
Kyungsoo should have finished high school last year but he and his mother went to America because his mother got pregnant and she was more comfortable giving birth where her own parents were residing. Jongin knew how much Kyungsoo loved his mother, so it wasn't a surprise to him when he found out that Kyungsoo was willing to stop his studies for a while in exchange of accompanying his mother overseas since his father couldn't easily abandon his work.
Jongin entered the dining room and saw that Kyungsoo's back was on him. He immediately ran up to him and covered the other's eyes. He carefully bent down and whispered into Kyungsoo's ears 'Guess Who?' in which Kyungsoo instantly gasped.
"Jongin!" Kyungsoo quickly got up from his seat and wrapped his arms around his bestfriend.
"Happy Graduation!" Jongin greeted, handing his simple gift to Kyungsoo. He then turned to Kyungsoo's mom and politely greeted her.
Jongin shifted his eyes to the last person in the room that he hadn't greeted yet. "So this must be Taeoh...such a cutie. It maybe a bit late but congratulations Auntie on giving birth on this one."
Jongin genuinely smiled, letting the child grabbed his finger and played with it.
"Always such a sweetheart you are Jongin. How about you take your seat, I'm sure you are already hungry..."
"You know me so well Auntie..." Jongin grinned and took his usual place beside Kyungsoo.
They started on dinner and Jongin happily devoured Kyungsoo's mom's home cooked meal.
"So what's your plan for college?" Jongin asked after having his tummy filled.
"I'm just waiting for an acceptance letter from your university." Kyungsoo smirked expecting the surprise look on Jongin's face.
"Really?" Jongin then turned to his bestfriend's parents. "Then if auntie and uncle don't mind, you can stay with me. My ghost of a father bought me a small apartment near the university, said it was the least he could do for me."
"Let's wait for my acceptance letter first before we talk about things like that." Kyungsoo smiled and offered to clean and change his younger brother while his mother did the dishes.
Jongin helped Kyungsoo's mother a bit, taking the plates to the sink. Once the table was cleared, Mrs. Do urged him to get ready for bed. Kyungsoo's parents knew Jongin's situation with his mother and they never minded Jongin staying with them. The Do's always treated Jongin like family, he used to sleep in the guestroom whenever he was over but since it was turned into a nursery for the baby, Jongin had to crash into Kyungsoo's room.
Jongin went upstairs just like Mrs. Do suggested, he was about to enter Kyungsoo's room when he heard the soft humming coming from the nursery. He took a peek into the room and saw Kyungsoo lulling his younger brother to sleep. He stayed for a bit; entertained by the scene before him, then he went back to Kyungsoo's room.
"You really like your brother..." Jongin stated when Kyungsoo entered his room. He was looking at the framed picture of Kyungsoo with baby Taeoh in his arms.
"He is family, what's not to like..." Kyungsoo examined Jongin's expression. "Still hating on kids, Jongin?
"You know I don't hate them. I like them as long as they are not mine..." Jongin grinned plopping on the bed.
"So you really have no plans of having a child of your own?" Kyungsoo inquired further.
"Nope!" Jongin was so sure of his answer, Kyungsoo would have pried into it more but the sound of his heart breaking was so loud in his ear that he decided to let the topic go for now.
