We left for the quest early morning. Luke was nowhere to be seen, which made me feel sad for some reason. I realized then that sparing and talking with him the afternoon before had struck up a friendship between us, and I wasn't quite sure what to make of that.
Will hugged our brothers goodbye, and Percy finished saying goodbye to Chiron. Percy was given Riptide, the beautiful gold pen which turned into an awesome bronze sword. I had never understood why the pen was gold when the sword was bronze, it made no sense.
Argus, the tall man with a thousand blue eyes, dropped us off at the city on his way to sell strawberries. By the time we got into Manhattan it was sunset and starting to rain. Argus unloaded our bags, made sure we got our bus tickets, then drove away, the eye on the back of his hand opening to watch us as he pulled out of the parking lot.
"So, we're off to save the world... but first we've got to catch a bus?" I raised an eyebrow.
Grover nodded, and Will shook his head, smiling. "Weird, isn't it?"
"Yup." I agreed.
I opened my backpack to find something to amuse myself with only to find that someone had repacked my entire backpack. My spare clothes and warm jacket were still inside, but someone had added a bunch of stuff to it. On top of everything was a small wedge of paper.
I opened the paper, and unfolded it, to reveal writing.
Emmalie,
This was to say thanks for yesterday. You're the first person to make me laugh in ages. The last person to do so... well, let's just say that I see her every day, but she doesn't make me laugh anymore. Thank you for bringing joy back in my life.
Uh... The passcode for the shoes is Emma. And, they won't throw you off any cliffs, don't worry. I promise on the river Styx.
LukeI felt touched. Luke must have repacked my bag after I had finished packing. Maybe the prophecy meant what I thought it meant after all. I wondered what he meant about the shoes, but I had a sneaking suspicion. I looked inside my bag again and found a pair of shoes on top.
Out of the bag, they looked quite cool. The shoes were black with blue and orange flowers up the sides. I had no clue how Luke knew what my favourite colours were, but he had gotten them spot on. On the undersides of the shoes, my name was printed in calligraphy. Luke's written words wormed their way through my head. They won't throw you over any cliffs, don't worry. I promise on the river Styx.
"Emma" I whispered to the shoes. Beautiful white wings shot out from the sides, which began to flap. The shoes lifted up into the air slightly, before sitting back down on my palm.
"Where'd you get those?" Will asked curiously, noticing the winged shoes in my hands.
"Luke. He packed them into my bag without me noticing" I answered.
Annabeth frowned, and I bit my lip. Oops. Now I have to add jealousy to the list of reasons why Annabeth hates me. I realized. I'd forgotten that Annabeth had a crush on Luke.
The next bus wasn't going to arrive for ten minutes yet, so I decided to amuse myself by learning how to fly my shoes. Will kept on giving me 'helpful' tips, and Percy and Grover didn't seem to bothered. But Annabeth looked more than a little annoyed.
"Emily. Get down from there, there is mortals around!" Annabeth let out her breath furiously.
"One, its Emmalie not Emily. Two, the mist will hide me." I told her evenly.
"Emmalie may as well get used to the shoes. She might need them at some point" Will pointed out.
Annabeth huffed, and went to sit next to Grover on the bench.
