The Exceptions

Prologue

 Earth 2149. The world was dying, on its last breath. There were no more oceans, sand, dirt, ponds, forests. This included the wildlife as well. The only thing remaining, humans and the mess they've created. Each country was confined in a large dome-like structure to keep the last bit of clean oxygen contained from the damaged atmosphere.

People can no longer travel from country to country due to the ocean being empty. Now, it was filled with debris and waste. The world had fallen apart years ago and was finally coming to its end.

The sun was months away from bursting. Soon, there would be no natural light. The human race was doomed and the government wasn't even hiding it. The sun had turned into a Red Giant years ago. It was the first step in the process of the sun exploding. When it does explode, the remaining population will have to be evacuated to the "Replicas." The replicas are an exact copy of the inside of each building or house, just underground.

In 2018, there was a blood moon eclipse. At the time people saw this as a "Sign of End Times." However, there was no aftermath following the event. Many thought the world would end immediately after, so when it didn't many assumed it was simply a myth. Turns out, it was the first warning. Little did they know, the world would end over a hundred years later.

The government was untruthful and unjust. They wanted a warn order to keep the people on their toes to constantly be afraid. In 2023, the US went to war with North Korea. They dropped an atomic bomb onto Washington DC, killing not only everyone in the state but 300,000 others in the surrounding states in 48 hours. Millions of others who didn't die from the initial impact grew ill from the high exposure to radiation. When the US retaliated, they sent a nuclear bomb to North Korea where nearly 400,000 people were killed instantly.

At this time, not only was the US and North Korea at war, but many other countries were in some sort of war as well. This chaotic period was called "The Final Battle." The wars lasted almost a hundred years, constantly fighting from 2023-2110. This time was so messy and wasteful that it caused the earth to essentially fail. Between human pollution, global warming and all of the radiation from the bombs, the earth was officially dying. Exponentially.

In 2124, the government built the domes as oceans began to disappear and the marine life grew extinct. Once these domes were built, the air became crucial. The population had to be limited, families could only have three children. Eventually, in 2131, the air worsened. The trees began to die out. The limit was changed to two children per family. In the entire world had 1,000 trees. Most were in Africa, the rest were spread out on other countries.

Since the domes covered each individual country, they could not travel out of theirs. The countries kept in touch, but in 2148, the U.S lost contact with Australia. Last time they were in contact, there were ten people left alive that they knew of. It was now, 2149 and no one has heard from them in over a year.

Hawaii was the first American state to go, along with some other parts of Japan following soon after. But Australia, it was the first full country to get lost.

 Alessia Hazen was a seventeen-year-old girl. Her skin was tanner than most, and she was very fit, being a full-time dancer. She was half Hawaiian, which was, unfortunately, a dead race, and half Italian. Her hair was dark brown and she was very short. She had a disease called heterochromia, making her eyes two different colors. Her left was bright blue and her right was a light green. Colored eyes were very rare, and almost no one had blue or green eyes, let alone both.

She was a quiet girl, she never talked much to anyone or let anyone in. She bounced back and forth from foster home to foster home. She had been in various homes, the rare and occasional nice ones, the abusive ones, the neglective ones, etc. No one ever wanted her. This was why she had trust and abandonment issues.

Alessia was found on the side of a road with her twin brother, Elijah. They were unfortunately separated and she hadn't seen him since then. She was constantly missing someone she didn't even know and it hurt. She would give anything to reunite with him.

She had been to twelve homes and finally decided to audition for a dance school called "Manhattans Finest." It was an extremely competitive school and was almost impossible to get into. It was open to anyone who could get in, it didn't matter where you were from, considering they would stay in dorms anyway. She auditioned at fifteen, got in and had been living there for the past two years and finally found a family, people who wanted her.

Alessia was also a witch of sorts. She only told selective people, because there were stories on the news of gifted people being killed for having special abilities. Especially the witch-like beings. People like this were called Exceptions. They were frowned upon and considered disgraces. No one really knew how they obtained their powers. It was assumed it the genes were random. Each Exception had one of many different abilities like immortality, telekinesis, mind control, speed and super strength, flight, speed memory, creating illusions, duplicate effects or alas being able to do magic. Alessia, however, was able to not only do magic, but she was also a telekinesis. She was constantly confused by this, considering there have never been cases of anyone with more than one ability. For a while, there was no one she could relate to about it, or even ask.
