I rush right down the stairs to answer the door. Not even halfway down and he rings the bell again. Seriously, no patience. I grab my black purse from the table and throw my lipstick in, just in case. I make sure my keys, wallet and phone are safely inside, then I open the door. Oh wow.
I don't think I've ever seen a man look so attractive. Okay, scratch that, I definitely have never seen a man look so attractive. He's wearing a fitted black suit with a black shirt underneath. Every piece of fabric is clinging to his body in all the right places, perfectly showcasing his broad shoulders and defined muscles. His normally wild curls are neatly tamed. They're not slicked straight back, but pushed to the side and away from his face. Honestly, he looks heavenly. What? No, Scarlett no!
I shut the door behind me and look up at him. For the first time since I've met him he has a genuine smile on his face, the corners of his mouth spread ear to ear exposing his pearly teeth. His pale blue orbs are full of light and seem to be tracing me up and down. He subconsciously pulls his plump bottom lip between his teeth and all of a sudden I feel the urge to bite it myself. Scarlett, come on! "See something you like?" I tease and push past him, making my way to the car.
I hear his mellifluous laugh close behind me, but I don't turn to look at him. That laugh does things to me. I attempt to reach for the door handle when a large hand grips my wrist, stopping me. I'm soon spun around, standing much too close to Asher. "You look amazing, Scarlett." What? As if I already couldn't breathe, my heart decides it would be a good time to stop as well. Pull it together woman! Honestly, I didn't think he even remembered my first name. He's never called me anything but "Indigo," or "Miss Indigo." For some reason, I shiver at the sound of it. A good shiver.
I can feel my face heat up, surely turning a deep shade of red. He smiles at me and slips his arm by to open my door. "So he does have manners?"
"Once in a while, maybe." After a quick wink, he shuts the car door and pops on over to the driver's seat.
We drive in silence for a little while. It's not awkward, but there's a slight tension in the air which I choose to ignore. My mind starts to drift, but never seems to get to a topic not involving the man to my left. "Why are you bringing me here?" I finally decide to break the silence.
He doesn't take his eyes off the road to answer. His eyebrows furrow ever so slightly. "What are you talking about? I said I'd pick you up, so I picked-"
"No, Asher. I mean why are you taking me? I'm sure there are hundreds of women you could choose from, so why me and not someone else?"
I can tell he's slightly taken aback by the question. I'm not sure why, though. We've done nothing but bicker and disagree since we've met. He's made it abundantly clear that he does not want to work with me. He really does a good job at implying that he only sees women in secretarial positions and not as an equal. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I know way more about law than he does. He may have me beat with the logistical business side of things, but I'm very closely matched. I know for sure I outshine him in the communication and customer care portion of the job as well, yet he refuses to see any of that. He just treats me like an apprentice or something and not the equal that I am.
I just don't get him. Once in a while he acts like a human and then he snaps right back to his normal snippy attitude. The worst part is that he's totally corrupted me. I may be sarcastic and moody once in a while, but I don't usually instigate things. At least, never to this extent. He just really knows what buttons to push and his favorite thing to do is to run his hands down the panel, smashing them all at once. But, even though he acts like trash ninety percent of the time, I still can't stop being a jittery mess around him. Seriously, what's wrong with me? Why can't I just let him be my mortal enemy and leave it at that? Curse you, Asher Black, and your stupid movie-star face.
