(D/n) - Daughter's name - I couldn't pick on because I like too many!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"(D/n)? Would you be able to go and play upstairs for a little bit?"

"Why mummy?" She asked you.

"Because me and daddy are going to sort out your birthday presents and we want it to be a surprise for you." You put on a smile for her because obviously this was a lie but you didn't want her to know. It wasn't the biggest lie that you've ever told because you were sorting out her birthday but in a completely different way.

"Okay mummy." She smiled and headed upstairs. You waited till you heard her bedroom door close before you turned to Benedict. "Why?" You asked him. "Why your daughter's birthday?"

"Because I have to (Y/n)!" He said. "I have to go!"

"No you don't. You forget that I work in the exact same industry as you. I know how it works and I also know that you cannot miss your daughter's birthday." He tried to speak but you cut him off, furious. "Benedict, I love you and so does (D/n) but you cannot do this!"

"(Y/n), you don't understand."

"No. It's you that doesn't understand! That is your daughter and she should come first, before anything else. If you go, she will be devastated. She will be confused and that's not fair. That is not what I want for our daughter on her birthday. She needs her father there."

"She does come first and so do you. Look, I know this isn't fair but what else can I do? I don't have a choice! You think I want to be away for my daughter's birthday, you think I don't hate being away from her." He took and step closer and held you in his arms. "From you."

"Then call them and say that you can't make it." There was another long pause. "You're unbelievable Benedict." You looked at him before you started to walk away. "Absolutely unbelievable. I knew that this is what I, we, were signing up to when we married and had (D/n) but I would do anything that I could to make sure that I was here for something like this. I have sacrificed so much so that I couldn't miss things like this and I know how much work means to you; sometimes you care about it too much. I get it, I really do but I also know how much you love that little girl and how much she loves you." He looked down. "I remember a time where you would have done anything to have a child, when we thought that, that would never happen for us. I remember how you said to me when I got pregnant that you would do anything that needed to be done for her, for me. Please Benedict. Think about it."

You walked upstairs, leaving Benedict alone and headed towards (D/n)'s room. Before you went into her room, you wiped your eyes of any tears. "Hey." You said, closing the door behind you. "What are you doing?" You sat down beside her.

"Why were you and daddy shouting at each other?" She asked, her eyes filled with so much wonder. "We couldn't decide on a birthday cake. Daddy's sorting it out." You said, before standing up again. "I'm going for a shower but Daddy is downstairs if you need anything." With that you left her alone in her room.

You jumped into the shower and let the steaming hot water wash away your worries. You thought about Benedict, you thought about when you were told that there was a possibility that you and could might not be able to have children. You remember how he cried. You got out of the shower, into your pyjamas and headed downstairs where (D/n) was sat at the table, eating her dinner and reading one of her books as she did so. She was very clearly Benedict's daughter.

"Hey." You said, when you saw Benedict.

"Hey." He replied as you sat down next to him. There was a moment's pause until he said. "You were right. I do care too much about work but you were also right when you said that I would do anything for her and for you." He looked at you, he'd been crying, just as you had. "I called them (Y/n) and I told them that no matter what my family comes first and that I wouldn't be able to make it. They were pissed that it was short notice but understood the situation. I'm so sorry babe. I know how much this means to you." He was right. It did mean a lot. Your dad was never there for your birthday. You hadn't seen him in years and you didn't want the same for (D/n). "Thank you." You whispered as he pulled you into a hug. "I love you so much." You told him as he kissed you. "I love you too."
