I looked down at the knife that I was twirling in my hand, hearing the distant laughs of Bella and Laurel from outside. My eyes looked up to the window, a small smile hinting at my lips.
"Are you okay?" Lisa asked me, making me jolt. I nodded, turning to her and then motioning for her to sit next to me, which she did.
"Why do you ask?" I asked after a minute. She wrapped her arms around me and held me close, smiling as I chuckled and leaned my head on her shoulder.
"Just wanted to make sure," she said softly. I shook my head.
"Are you?" I asked after a minute. She nodded in response, too, flashing her eyes to me and then moving it to the window.
"Are any of us?" She asked. I leaned forward and kissed her gently, and then smiled as I pulled away.
"We will be," I promised, though I didn't know if I knew it myself.
"I love you, Lynne." She said after a second.
"I love you more," I said, chuckling gently and raising my eyebrows.
She opened her mouth to speak before I heard a loud scream.
"LYNNE!" Bella shouted. I jumped to my feet quickly, followed by Lisa. I froze up at the sound of Bella's voice in fear, feeling the anxiety roll in my chest. When she screamed again is when I jumped into action, running out of the barn faster than I ever had before, turning the corner to the woods to see Michael, Mark, and Luna pulling up and running out themselves at the sound of a loud bang.
"BELLA!" I screamed, forcing myself through the branches and the trees until I came across Bella, her hands shakily holding a gun and tears rolling down her face.
"LYNNE!" She shouted, "LYNNE! LYNNE! LYNNE!" I came next to her and forced her back, as my eyes scanned the area and then fell.
"Oh my God. . ." I whispered, seeing a walker dead on the ground with a bullet through its head. Next to him, was Laurel, a bite rippled on her abdomen through the blood I could barely see and her choking on blood. The air coldly left its imprint on us, as Bella hit me and kicked to get out of my grasp as I held her back from her girlfriend.
"Lynne! Let me go!" She screamed, biting my hand and scratching me for the first time since she was little. "L-Laurel! No!"
Luna approached from behind me and immediately slid to the ground next to the young girl, as she looked up to meet our gaze. I looked to Lisa, who grabbed Bella and held her close to her, stroking her hair as tears ran down her face.
"Laurel, you're going to be okay, baby girl," Luna said, holding her in her arms, "I swear, you're going to be okay."
"L-Luna?" She asked, shakily gripping her shirt and then looking to me. "L-Lynne?"
"You gotta save her, Lynne! You-You gotta!" Bella screamed in Lisa's arms, collapsing to her knees as she did the same.
I looked to Luna and shook my head.
"Am I gonna di-die, Luna?" Laurel asked, her bright eyes turning dark and grey, as her hands gripped gently on the fabric, her chest heaving with the air that was itching down her lungs. Her smile was faded and covered in blood that coated her red lips, her neck having two long strips of leaking liquid running down. Her aura was dead.
This was all my fault.
"Laurel, listen. Everything's gonna be fine. We're going to go to this new place, Arkadia. Lucas and Michael say it's amazing. The-There's a lot of people there, Laurel. Lots of people your age. There are animals. Lucas even says there was a cat running around. A cat, Laur. A cat."
Laurel smiled weakly, "are there b-bunnies?" She asked.
Luna chuckled and nodded her head, gripping her hand. "There's lots of bunnies, Laurel. And you can have as many as you want."
". . . B-Bella and I can have a bunny?" She asked, a small giggle leaving her throat, "Bella and I can be. . . mommies?"
Hearing her voice without energy and excitement made me flinch, her eyes so desperate as she choked on blood that ran out of her mouth. She looked to me with the same look Alex had in her eyes right before the last time I saw her. Her voice was a razor blade in my ears, her lips parting only for pleads to escape them.
She was broken.
"Yes, Laurel. You can have whatever you want. I swear to you. You're going to be okay. L-Lynne is gonna fix you, and we're going to go to Arkadia and everything is going to be alright, okay?" Luna whispered, tears falling on her shirt.
"Bella and I. . . are we going to get married?" She asked. I could hear the faint sound of Bella screaming through Lisa's arms, whimpering and crying to try and get me to save her girlfriend.
"You two are going to get married," I spoke, "and Mrs. Bearington will be the maid of honor, and you two are going to be together forever."
"That's right," Luna spoke quietly, shaking her head. "Everything's gonna be alright, Laurel. I'm-. . . I'm so sorry. . ."
Laurel's eyes glazed over like glass and soon her chest wasn't heaving anymore. Bella whimpered from behind me as I stared down at Laurel's body, blood covering her body.
Everyone fell silent as the disgusting scent of death covered us, shaky breaths leading through the environment.
"NO!" Bella screamed, kicking and hitting Lisa as she plunged forward.
"Shh, you're going to be okay, it's going to be okay." I heard her whisper to my sister, who kept screaming and yelling, trying with all of her power to get to her.
A teardrop fell on her body.
"I'm sorry," Luna repeated, "I'm so sorry."
