LOUIS
At 4 weeks old Naomi was doing wonderful, she had come a long way since her birth.
She was currently at 4.3 pounds, which was a great improvement from the 2.9 pounds she had been born weighting. She also didn't need the CPAP machine anymore to help her control her breathing, but she was still getting a bit of oxygen through a nose cannula, but it wasn't bad. There was also the fact that her body was controlling her body temperature better, which meant she could be out of the incubator for longer periods of time, and she had also graduated from the feeding tube.
Since her birth, Naomi had been being fed Louis' breastmilk, which he had been pumping non stop, and was given to her through the feeding tube, and when it was decided she might be ready to leave behind the tube, Louis had tried to breastfeed her, but she hadn't latch, so they had tried with a special bottle for preemies, and that she had taken on pretty well.
But still, it made Louis sad that he wasn't able to feed her himself, but at least she was eating on her own, which was a big improvement.
"Do you think maybe when she's a bit bigger she'll want to breastfeed?" Louis wondered as he fed Naomi a bottle.
"It's a possibility, and you can keep trying" nurse Angela replied "But it's common in premature babies not to do it, but that's alright, she's still getting all the nutrients she needs"
"Yeah" Louis said as he stared down at his little daughter "It's just that I fed my son Julian for a little longer than a year, and I loved doing it, it was like our special time, and it gave us this great connection".
"You can connect with Naomi without breastfeeding, you're actually doing it right now, you know she eats a lot better when it's you or her dad feeding her, than if any of us do it" Angela explained.
"Really?" Louis asked, because he didn't know that.
"Yes" Angela smiled "And when she's ready to go home, you'll be able to connect even more, you'll see".
"I want her to come home so bad, but I'm scared too" Louis said looking down at Naomi again.
"Why are you scared, love?" the nurse wondered.
"Because she's a premature baby, and she's so small and fragile" Louis explained.
"She'll only be released from here when she's ready, and that will mean she will have to be strong and big enough, so it will be just like when you took your son home" Angela explained.
"Julian was 8 pounds at birth" Louis explained "Will Naomi have to be 8 pounds to go home?".
"No, she'll probably go home a lot sooner than 8 pounds, but she'll be 100% healthy, so it won't be any different" Angela answered.
"Okay" Louis nodded "Thank you".
The nurse smiled at him, and went to check on the baby in the incubator next to Naomi's, leaving the mum and daughter alone.
"Was that good?" Louis asked the baby when she finished the bottle.
But Naomi started fussing, and Louis got nervous, and left the bottle aside and started to try to calm her down.
"Shh, it's okay" Louis said as he rubbed her back, thinking maybe she had gas after drinking the milk "You're okay, Naomi".
But she kept whining, and it was a super high pitch whine that that couldn't compare to how Julian cried when he was a newborn, and it scared Louis even more.
But then the nurse came back, seeing that Louis was having trouble with the baby, and she took her, and pretty soon Naomi stopped fussing.
