hyunjin had invited you to spend new year's eve with him and although it wasn't the most romantic of settings—since his parents were there—you cherished any time you could get with your boyfriend. you knew how close he was with his family and you enjoyed spending time with all of them as they were always welcoming of you whenever you visited.
with a bag of opened chips on the coffee table, glasses of champagne in hand, and the tv displaying the annual new year's eve program, minutes turned into seconds as the final countdown was well underway. you looked over your shoulder to see hyunjin excitedly yelling out the numbers to which his mom had to calm him down—it was safe to say maybe hyunjin had one too many glasses of champagne to drink that evening. with a halfhearted smile, you cheered along with the rest of his family as the clock struck midnight and a celebration of fireworks began outside.
thousands of hues mixed in the night sky as fireworks from below shot up to the stars—sparkling and crackling in the most magnificent of ways. unexpectedly, you looked down as you felt something soft brush up against your thigh only to see a trembling kkami looking for comfort. hyunjin seemed to notice as he looked over to see his dog curled up in your lap. with a look of astonishment, hyunjin spoke, "kkami- he never goes to anyone like that..."
while stroking the soft fur of hyunjin's dog, he continued to explain how kkami rarely ever sought cuddles from anyone other than himself. a hint of jealousy was laced in his voice but the overwhelming feeling of love for you took over as he appreciated the interaction—assisting you by showing you all the spots kkami liked to be pet to ensure he was well taken care of. and so with the duty of making sure kkami felt protected and safe, you hummed softly until you felt the steady rising and lowering of his chest slow and his eyes close as kkami finally fell asleep at peace.
