When I woke up, I had forgotten where I was.
But when I saw Erin and Blake, I remembered everything. And my head spun as I tried to comprehend everything, something I didn't have the chance to do yesterday.
My parents were dead, or undead I guess. My sister was an emotional train wreck. She was crying in her sleep last night, and my heart broke for her. And me, I had to be strong for her. I couldn't break down, what would she do? I didn't want to find out.
"Hey, are you up?" Blake's voice snapped me back into reality and away from my thoughts.
I blinked and looked over at him. "Yea, I'm up. Just thinking."
He slowly nodded his head. "I know what you mean. Do you need to talk about it?"
Talk about it? So when all of this was over my school would know all about my feelings? No thank you.
"No, I'm good. Just need to keep my head on straight." I told him, ending whatever moment he thought we were about to have.
He just shook his head, not believing that I was emotionally stable. He shouldn't. Guess the guy wasn't at stupid as I thought.
"If you say so. Nothing came last night, and nothing this morning. I'm gonna get a few hours of sleep while your up." Was all he said before he laid down on his own makeshift bed on the floor and passed out.
Great, so now I'm designated ground watcher.
I stretched, feeling my shoulders and back pop before standing up. Erin was still asleep, and I wasn't going to wake her up after yesterday.
I walked over to the entrance and poked my head out to look down, and at first I didn't see anything. We were so high up, I thought it was a bird or something.
It was another one.
My heart fell to my feet as I watched it. It's face from above looked shredded. It's skin was peeling off of its face and hanging down. It's arms were still all there, but it's left arm had it's elbow area completely shown. I could see blood all over it's body and it limped around, making circles around the base of the tree.
It knew we were here.
As quietly as I could, I try to wake up Blake.
"Hey, Blake." Tapping his shoulder, nothing.
I shook his shoulder vigorously, until his eyes opened. "What's your pro-" he began, and I clamped a hand over his mouth.
His face turned confused, and I pointed to the floor.
His eyes widened and he slowly nodded his head. I removed my other hand from his mouth.
"What do we do?" I whispered, hoping he had an answer.
"We're going to have to get rid of it."
My heart stopped momentarily. "Kill it?" I whispered, hoping I misunderstood.
"Yes, Kiara. Kill it." He said, standing up.
I was officially scared shitless. "But can't we-"
He cut me off. "It's us or it. And we can't let it get to Erin." He said, looking over at my baby sister who was still sleeping.
He was right. And we had to kill it before it realized how to climb.
My face hardened and I turned serious. "What are we going to kill it with?"
He tossed me a machete. I hadn't held one of these in years. Since my dad taught me how to use one, as a hobby.
