Why would he admire me? Because of what I can do with a machete? I'd think about it later.
"So where is this shower?" I asked Blake, we'd been walking for about five minutes now down the same street.
"We're almost there, calm down." He said, not even looking over at me.
I rolled my eyes and looked over at Erin. She looked sick.
"You okay?" I asked, putting my hand on her shoulder.
She blinked like she was waking up, and looked back at me. "Yea, just tired and hungry."
Her face shown otherwise. She had dark bags under her eyes, and her eyes were bloodshot. Probably from all of the crying, but she's been sleeping; or so I thought.
I pressed my palm to her forehead, checking for fever.
I automatically pulled my hand away, she definitely had a fever.
"Blake, we need to get to wherever fast, Erin's burning up." I said, and he stopped walking.
"She has a fever? Erin, look at me." Not waiting for my response, and staring at Erin.
I saw the blood drain from his face as his tan skin went stark white.
"What's wrong? She's probably just sick from being outside so much, it's fine." Pulling her towards me and continuing down the street.
Blake didn't say anything else, but I could tell that he was keeping an obvious distance from Erin.
What was his problem?
When we stopped, it was in front of a little yellow house. I was taken aback by how Blake thought this was a safe spot to take a shower.
The house was anything but new. It was chipping paint everywhere, and the porch' s roof was almost caving in.
"Blake, are you sure this is the right place? It doesn't look like we could walk in, let alone take a shower." I said, starting to question his iq.
He just laughed under his breath, shaking his head. "The house is fine, c'mon."
And so we walked up the few stairs and up to the door, and I assumed we were just going to walk in.
Blake knocked.
I was shocked someone would be living here. The house barely looked like an actual house.
And when the door opened, it was an old lady who opened the door. She was short, with long gray hair. She wasn't creepy, but she looked like she could be mean if she needed to.
Her face lit up with a smile when she saw Blake. "Blake, who's your girlfriend? Took you long enough sweet pea, but I knew you could do it."
Blake's face and neck turned scarlet. "Um, she's not my girlfriend, grandma. Sorry to disappoint, but she and her sister need a shower. Can we come in?"
Her expression changed from happy to analytical. She looked at me, as if sizing me up.
I started to feel weird, being stared at. "Um, ma'am?" She ignored me, and looked down at Erin.
Her eyes grew wide and curious. "Your not well." The woman said, not asking.
Erin grew wary and moved closer to me. "I think I have a cold." She said, barely over a whisper.
The lady just shook her head. "More than a cold, I believe. Come in, don't touch anything." She said, moving away from in front of the doorway.
I glanced over at Blake, and he just nodded for me to go in. Great.
When we had all walked inside and she shut the door, I looked around. The inside was the opposite of the exterior. Everything was new looking, and homey.
"Is this your sister?" She asked me.
I immediately pulled Erin closer to me. "Yes she is, Miss...?" Trying to get something to call her other than creepy lady.
She just grew more solemn. "Call me Peggy. No fancy titles before or after. Blake, show Erin where the restroom is so she can get washed up." Leaving me and her alone in the living room.
I hadn't told her Erin's name.
All of my warning alarms were going off on my head as I realized this.
"Listen I-" about to come up with an excuse to leave right now, but Peggy cut me off.
"Your sister is not well at all. And-"
"It's just a-" I tried interrupt, but she ignored me.
"And it is not just a cold. She is infected. She will not be herself much longer, I am sorry. You need to leave her within the next few hours." She concluded, leaving me shell shocked.
Infected? Leave her? I think not.
I collected myself before answering. "I'm not leaving my sister anywhere. And whatever she's 'infected' with, I can handle. I no longer need a shower we'll be leaving when she's-"
She interrupted me, again.
"She will face the same fate your mother has. And you will not be able to handle what happens when she turns. And the sooner you realize this, the sooner you need to leave her. It's essential." She said calmly, but with authority; like she knew what she was telling me was the whole truth.
How did she know about my mom? My sister's name? And especially about if she was infected or not?
"In all due respect ma'am, Peggy, I don't know how you're getting your information; but if she's infected why am I not?" I said, trying not to be snippy with an elderly woman.
She smirked, making me assume she had caught a little of my attitude. "Well, Kiara Griffin, you cannot extract the disease. And your sister is infected because of the blood of the dead on your clothing. My information is purely from your mind. My sources must surely be reliable, correct?"
What? "So it's my fault. She's going to turn into one of those disgusting things because of me?"
Peggy looked baffled. "That's all you took in of what I just told you?"
I was angry. I was disappointed in myself. I felt like crying. "YES! She's all I have left! I can't... I can't lose her." I yelled, mumbling the last part.
Her face shown lots of curiosity, but also sympathy. "I understand, Kiara. But there is no other way, I'm truly sorry. I suppose you could make the most of the time you have left with her, stay here until she's turned."
Just as she said this, Erin walked into the room. She looked a little better, but only because she was clean. My heart broke as she smiled at me, walking over.
"What's wrong Kiara?" She asked, hugging me.
I might as well just let her hug me now, it's too late. Too late to get her back. Go back in time. I felt my face crumple as I looked down at her concerned one, and a tear slid down my cheek.
Pushing her hair out of her face, I just smiled through my tears. "Nothing, Erin. Come sit with me for a little bit okay? We'll be here until we need to leave again."
I was about to spend the next few hours with my baby sister, before she was gone.
So my eyes welled up a little when Erin smiled at Kiara, and hugged her. :'( ...But I'm a crybaby so don't mind me.
Although the next chapter will be really emotional, if you don't get sad you might not have a heart. Jkjk, but it will be sad.
Thank you for reading, it means so much to me! <3
