ADELAIDE’S POV
I trailed behind him, keeping enough distance to still gather my thoughts in peace, yet not lose track of him in the crowd.
“You want some?” He asked as he ladled out the red liquid that had sat openly in the bowl for the whole night.
“It’s punch.” He piped up, answering my mental debate to whether this was some kind of alcoholic liquid that would lead me to an endless amount of trouble.
Without another word, he chuckled to himself as he finished scooping out the vibrant red frink, passing me a full plastic cup as I muttered a small ‘thanks.’
Abandoning me yet again, he walked off, occasionally turning around to make sure I was on his lead until we reached a small leather couch in the back corners of the house.
“Y-you have a nice house.” I mumbled, trying to break the wall of silence between us despite the music blaring from the speakers, the walls seeming to vibrate softly as a result of both the jumping around and music.
Taking a sip from his cup, he looked at me; seeming to study me as a whole, making me shift uncomfortably in my seat.
Had I done something wrong?
Did I look weird?
“Why’d you come?” He finally asked with a small smile, slightly shaking his head in the process. “I-I mean – what made you change your mind?” He repeated, slightly more nervous. It wasn’t how I’d ever seen Shawn. He’d always been the confident guy – the guy who could perform on stage, and sing for millions on the internet. He was…
Someone.
“I thought parties ‘weren’t your thing.’” He quoted, keeping his glare at my hands that sat wrapped shakily around my cup.
“They aren’t.” I responded simply.
I tried my best to keep my answers short and sharp. It wasn’t that I didn’t like talking to Shawn, but this just didn’t make sense at all. I was always in the shadows, when he had the spotlight shining on him.
People like Shawn don’t just talk to nobodies for no reason – it all just didn’t fit.
His lips formed into a small frown as he seemed to get lost in thought as he continued to eye out my features again.
“Liste-”
“Get up – I have an idea.” He shouted into my ear, as the music grew louder and louder. Standing up, he offered out his hand, however I pushed it aside and stood up, waiting for him to follow the lead.
“Where are we going exactly?” I asked, as he was mid-walk.
Turning around, his lips curled into a cheeky smirk. “You got to let your guard down.”
“You either trust me or you don’t. I think you’ll like it Addy.” He continued, before turning away and making his way through the crowd, over to the stair case.
With a sigh, I stupidly followed; my brain having no control over my body as the continuous thought that ‘Shawn is a nice guy - he won’t do anything bad’ looped itself in my head.
SHAWN’S POV
I jogged up the stairs and avoided eye contact as I pushed past the intimate couple making out against my parent’s bathroom.
Note to self – disinfect all doors and bedrooms from horny high schooler germs.
I opened my door and quickly laid everything out; fixing up messy piles, and hastily smoothing out my sheets before she came inside.
“Shawn what are w-” She questioned as she walked in, her face lighting up as soon as she walked in.
“I realised that wasn’t your whole scene – so I thought maybe I could get to know you somewhere… I don’t know – quieter?” I rambled to myself, tucking my hands sheepishly into the pockets of my jeans as she stood there in awe, making my way over to my wall covered in posters, papers and clippings.
“Woah.” She muttered under her breath as she walked along the wall, he hand running over the printed papers.
“You alright?” I laughed to myself, watching as she fell a light pink, suddenly regaining conscious of what she was doing and became her regular old closed off Adelaide.
“I just – did you take these?” She asked, amazement still clear in her voice as she admired the photographs on the wall.
“Me? No.. I just… I guess I just keep them there so I prepare myself for my goals one day?” Shrugging it off, only realising then that it sounded that lame as the words tumbled out.
“You want to travel the world?” She asked, her finger tracing over each and individual structure of the Eiffel tower that was printed on a large Polaroid printout.
“Yeah. How about you?”
“Ye- I mean… I don’t really know what I want. I just do whatever I need to do. My wants aren’t really a big part of the picture in my head.” She trailed off, her voice now barely audible.
“Shawn why am I here?” She questioned with a puzzled expression clear on her face as she shifted awkwardly on the spot.
“Wh-”
“I mean why am I here? Why did you invite me – we’ve hardly ever spoken.” She cut me off as she looked me in the eye. I don’t know what it was exactly, but something about it – it was like she was so upset, so pained. I just couldn’t explain it.
“I invited you because of that. We’d hardly ever spoken – I wanted to get to know you better… Is that alright?” I asked, seeing as her eyes bulged as I came to a halt.
“Yeah it’s just that no one ever really bothered.” She whispered, fiddling with the fingers as her eyes kept a steady gaze to the ground.
“Well if you’d allow me the honours, I Shawn Mendes would love to get to know you better.” I announced, earning a small smile out of her.
“Wanna dance?” I asked, extending my arm to her as I flashed a cheeky grin.
“I don’t want to go back down there.” She stated, looking at me as if I were stupid.
“Whoever said we had to go down there?”
“Mendes, I don’t know if you realised, but this is a club track.”
I made my way over to the light switch, turning the room light off as I chuckled to myself.
“What are you-”
“Shh.” I instructed as I earned a gasp from her as the small bulb lights lit that were laced along the top of each wall, with a flicker.
Glancing back to her, she looked as if she was a little kid in a candy shop.
I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I walked over to where she was, taking her hands into mine as the bass dropped.
“But Jordan – that’s the best music to dance to with a partner.” I smiled, taking her hands and propping them on my shoulders as I rested mine just above her hips, as we slowly swayed along, completely ignoring the beat of the track that played downstairs where all the teenagers were probably grinding shamelessly on each other.
