By the time Jake returned to the precinct, looking irritated, Kenzie was deep into a cold case. He did that a lot, enjoying finding patterns in old cases and helping give people closure after so many years without hope. He had solved twenty cold cases since he became a police officer, his eidetic memory giving him an edge that other people didn't have. His solves had gotten him two commendations as well. Kenzie had been watching with some amusement as Sergeant Jeffords had been forced to act several training simulations throughout the day, but thankfully Kenzie had gotten to skip that in order to orient himself with his new precinct. Kenzie glanced over at Jake, who was speaking to Charles and angrily sorting files on his desk, and Kenzie rolled his chair over to Gina's desk.

"Girl, can you do me a favour?" He asked her.

"Anything for my favourite half of Jenzie." Kenzie chuckled at Gina.

"Jenzie?"

"Jake and Kenzie!" She said in a whisper-exclaimed, giggling. "I was going to go with Kake, but that might end up with some confusion."

"Good call." Kenzie nodded. "Anyway. Once Detective Boyle leaves Jake can you get him to come to the interrogation room?"

"You got it."

"You're the best, girl." Kenzie beamed.

"You know it, girl."

Jake's eyes widened, and he barrelled into Kenzie's arms, the door swinging shut behind him. Kenzie wrapped his arms around Jake's back, holding Jake who was relaxing. He hid his face in Kenzie's neck for a minute, just breathing in his scent - sandalwood and vanilla - as he relaxed.

"What's wrong? You saw me this morning." Kenzie asked, pulling back enough to face Jake. When the undercover operation had ended just under a week ago, Jake and Kenzie had used the weekend they both had off to get re-acquainted with each other, and Kenzie had come to realise that their time apart had made him feel so strongly. He loved Jake Peralta, and he was determined to make sure he knew.

"I did everything right, and he still got away." Jake sounded so sad, and Kenzie sucked in a sharp breath.

"Sometimes these things are out of our control, Jake," Kenzie said softly. "But you will get him eventually. And you put away fourteen high-level mobsters. That's amazing, and you know I'm proud of you."

"Thanks, babe." Jake kissed Kenzie lightly before sighing, though he didn't move away from Kenzie and instead leant forward, Kenzie meeting him in the middle and their foreheads pressed together. "We should get back before Charles comes looking for us. He's supposed to be taking me to my welcome back party."
