The stale air of the small and homely inn was full of gentle classical music as the warm morning light cascaded past the sheer curtains. The gentle notes floated from the weathered gramophone that sat on the desk at the far end of the room, books piled high around it, while a white silk chemise was draped across the headboard of one of the two beds. Each single bed was pushed into the a corner with a small drawer by its side. One bed was occupied by a reading blonde, her slim body draped across the the duvet like silk, while a second woman strutted about the room in her underwear.Claud's white hair whipped around her as she searched for her hair tie while Margret watched in amusement. The gangster had her clothes laid out on her bed but she ignored them as she searched. Her friend watched her search the room for the black band.
"Ah-ha!" The white haired woman sprung up with the band in hand before she leapt over her suitcase and launched herself towards her bed where she bounced for a moment before rolling over to face Maggie. Different shades of blue clashed like a wave as a smile stretched across both women's faces. They giggled for a second before Claud pulled herself from the bed and back onto her feet. The blonde just stared at her friend, forgetting the book in her hands, before she spoke gently as her eyes flickered to the clock that hung on the rose paper printed wall.
"If you don't get dressed now you'll be late for your lunch!"
Claud smiles at the the taller woman "read to me as I change"
Maggie nodded enthusiastically as her blue eyes flickered back to the pages of her worn novel before she began to read softly in her light angelic voice. The Holmes woman recognized the story as Alice in Wonderland. She had seated herself on the edge of her bed and began to slip on the stockings, slowly dragging each piece of fine fabric up her leg, before connecting the garter to the elastic. Next she slipped on the creamy silk blouse over her bra and buttoned it as her friend continued to read the beloved tale. Claud slipped on a black skirt next, the fabric stopping mid shin, and tucked in her blouse.
The skirt was slim fitting and hugged her smooth legs modestly. She slipped a pair of black flat shoes ,but not before wiping some dust off, and shook out her hair. It hung around her like a snowy lions mane before she pulled it back into a loose braid. With a dab of peach lipstick and a spray of perfume, Claud was ready to go.
"I'll be off now" she called to her singer as she pulled on her peacoat and hat. Her gun and purse were taken from the table and slipped into her pocket before she was disappearing through the door. She wasn't going to put her gun in a holster in respect of the two women and their home.
"Bye!" Margaret called, not looking away from her book.
Claud glided down the hallway and past the boys shared room, both of them still fast asleep, and down into the main room of the inn. It smelt strongly of fresh coffee and sugar but was almost completely empty except for the old dog by the simmering fireplace. The chubby terrier huffed as she passed ,not bothering to move. The woman smiled at the tubby canine as she pushed the door open and stepped out into the cold Birmingham street.
