"About your situation. I've never seen anything like it." The old man said, "It's quite normal for really small children to see us so easily, but it's usually not like that for teens and adults. Do you recall ever hearing odd voices or seeing any suspicious-looking creatures?"
"No, not anything that really stood out to me," You responded with a more formal tone. "But may I ask, who are you?"
The old man looked surprised that he forgot to introduce himself. "Oh! I apologize, I assumed Yato told you. I'm Tenjin, the god of learning."
"Nice to meet you Tenjin. You also mentioned regalia, what's that?"
Mayu spoke up now, "I'm his regalia."
Yato also joined in, "Well technically your mine."
"Not anymore, you smelly scumbag." She snapped back.
Yato looked like he was struck by a lightning bolt, "How could you say that to your master Tomone!"
"You're not my master! And my names Mayu now!"
You tried your best to ignore the racket they were creating.
"That's enough." Tenjin interrupted. "(y/n), I will do my best to look into your situation even though it's not my particular area of work."
"Thank you so much, I appreciate you trying to help me."
"Your welcome, make sure to stop by again soon."
"We will," Yato assured him.
"Bye (y/n)!" Mayu yelled as we began walking back.
You turned around to wave. "Goodbye!"

You didn't take the fast way back home, instead, you just walked. Yato told you the story of the cat he was chasing on the street. Apparently, some kid made a wish for his cat to return after getting lost one day.
"So you're like a fairy," You said, nudging him.
"Not really.."
"Oh! You're the fairy godmother!"
Saying this made him laugh, something you've never seen him do before. He's been goofy and really weird but it was a genuine laugh.
"I actually go by 'Delivery God Yato'."
You laughed, clenching the sides of your stomach.
"Your laugh is funny." He said laughing at you laughing.
It was later in the afternoon now, but the sun was already beginning to set. The sky had hints of pink and purple but also yellow and orange.
"Yato doesn't the sky look pretty~"
"Heh, yeah it does."
You turned your head to get a view of his face but it was partially turned the other way. He may have been looking in another direction, but you could see the side of his face had a hint of pink. Then you noticed how close you were standing next to him. Your arms touched and if your hand was down, his would brush against it.
Maybe he feels uncomfortable...
You made a little space between the two of you. "Hey, Yato.."
"Yeah?"
"Mayu," You stared at the sidewalk and the cracks that you stepped on. "Were you guys dating?"
You felt that his eyes were on you now so you glanced up to match his. His cheeks were still pink and yours heated up as well.
"Why do you ask?"
"I dunno. Just wondering..." You said, your eyes trailing.
Your eyes wandered back to the ground and you started playing with your fingers.
Why am I so nervous? What if they were dating? They hate each other, don't they?
"Nah," he finally responded, "she was my regalia."
"Oh, yeah..." You felt embarrassed for asking such a stupid question, but you were also a bit relieved. "What exactly are regalia, though?"
Yato sighed and took a moment before responding. "...They are sacred weapons."
"Wait, Mayu is a weapon?!"
"Yeah but don't think of them as just weapons. They're more than that, they're people. They just take the form of a weapon when needed."
Yato now stared straight ahead. His face was cleared of pink but he seemed slightly depressed.
"Where's your regalia?" You probably shouldn't have asked this question because you were afraid of the answer. You didn't want to cause more pain for him, but your curiosity got the best of you.
"I don't have one."
You walked in front of Yato, stopping him from moving, and grabbed both of his hands, directing his attention to you again. "Hey.." You gazed into his eyes as he stared into yours. "Can I be your regalia..?"
He smiled again and tried to hold back a laugh, "That's not really possible."
"Why?"
"Regalias are people who've died."
Your eyes widened and you felt your heart sink. Regalias are people who've...
"After people die, gods are allowed to grant them a new life. But in this new life, they must serve their god."
Your eyes widened. "So Mayu is dead..."
"We aren't allowed to tell them anything about their past lives, including how they died. It's best to not mention it. Reminding them of this can cause pain and suffering."
Yato looked serious now, which was unusual.
"They are very important because they help us fight off phantoms..."
"What are those?!"
Yato looked at you and then pointed into the sky across the city. "Do you see that big one over there?"
There was nothing. Just the sky. You didn't even know what to look for...
"I don't see anything.." You responded quietly. Why was it that you could see Yato and Mayu, but not those things.
After walking for a while you finally reached your apartment building. You didn't do much that day but you were exhausted. You stretched your arms above your head and yawned.
"I think I'll go to sleep early, Yato. See you tomorrow morning?"
"Yeah, sure...You mean 1 pm right?"
"Yep!" You walked into the building after waving goodbye.
'I can't wait for tomorrow' You thought, smiling to yourself as you climbed the stairs. Even though you were happy to be around your new friend, you couldn't stop thinking about the regalia. You were able to communicate with people who've died...
Your 'situation' was a bit more complicated than you thought.
