"And I'm...?" She asked in a confused state, her eyes wary and blank unlike the usual studious, knowledgeable look she always had in her eyes. Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott were quiet; the trio were equally horrified that their intelligent friend was now under such circumstances.

"Esther Kaplan. My sister," Avi explained, holding her hand gently, his thumb wavering over her cold skin. She smiled softly at him, though her eyes weren't as tender as they would be when being called his sister, an unfamiliar expression brimming within them.

"And who is he?" She asked, pointing to the silent beatboxer watching hopelessly at his lover not recognize him.

Avi cleared his throat, his eyes wide knowing how painful it was for Kevin, and for all of them, to hear Esther speak in this way. To speak without any recognition of her loved ones at all.

Kevin spoke up. "Kevin Olusola, a dear friend," he simply said, his voice crackling as he had barely spoken in the past days.

Avi swiveled his neck back, wondering why the hell Kevin hadn't said that he was her boyfriend, that he freaking loved her.

Esther nodded. "Thank you for staying here for me. I don't know how I ended up here, or much of anything at all, to be honest. Wish all my memories could come back sooner, so I don't have to look at each of you with a blank gaze," she said solemnly.

"You'll remember soon enough," Scott intoned, trying to bring some hope and light into the room. "You're Esther Kaplan, the smartest woman I know; you will get through this."

     Esther beamed graciously, "Thank you."

Scott sent her a weak smile as the nurse reminded them that it was time for Esther to rest, causing them to exit the room. Avi left, kissing his sister's hand before he did, then glaring at Kevin, who looked down at the floor as he walked in devastation.

As soon as they exited, Avi grabbed Kevin's arm, pulling him to the secluded side of the hall.

"Why the hell did you not tell her the truth?! That you freaking love her," Avi hissed harshly, bringing Kevin's broken gaze over onto his angry face.

Kevin didn't say anything, couldn't say anything at all.

"Say something, you imbecile! And it better not be that you didn't have the heart to, since I freaking had to tell my own sister who I was! Not to mention, if it were Kirstie in that room not remembering a cursed thing, I would have told her who I was too! Why the hell did you not do anything?!" Avi's grip on Kevin grew tighter, causing Kevin's gloomy gaze to pierce directly through Avi's eyes.

"Because if I did, she'd feel like this was all her fault. Maybe we weren't meant to be, Avi. Have you ever thought about that? Maybe this happening to her is the consequence of our love. What if we're not supposed to be together? Maybe if she stayed with Darien, everything would have been better. Did you ever think about that, Avi?" Kevin said sharply, resulting in the bass to recognize the hurt in his best friend's eyes, letting go of his arm instantly.

Kevin walked away tiredly, leaving Avi to try to gather up the shattered shards of Kevin's heart and his own, in confusion.

Kevin was wrong, Avi had decided. If anything, this was just an obstacle trying to bring them to work things out. Together.
