Just say something, Kirstin thought to herself, as she gazed at herself in the mirror. She gazed at herself, her tremendous ivory gown, glistening with silver jewels galore, silver jewels replicas of the beaded tears rolling down her cheeks at this moment. It was her wedding day, and she wasn't happy. No matter what she could do, she just couldn't say it. She couldn't let him down, no matter what her heart desired. She couldn't destroy his heart, instead she tore her own and continued with the wedding. She just couldn't break this relationship off, in fear of the risk that came with it. So she ruined her life for all, carrying on with this.
Just say 'no' at the altar. Say 'no', Kirstin.
But she knew she couldn't do it. Never in a million years would she believe that she would be this scared not to say anything at all. She gave up on herself, on her true love.
She smiled weakly at herself, swallowing her tears, her soul shattering. She should be happy. The man that loved her was marrying her. Yet she wasn't, for she didn't love him back. Kirstie wiped her tears with her thumb, thankfully her makeup hadn't smeared off, as she reached over the vanity, grabbing the delicate, silky veil, placing it over her locks, embroidered with white roses. White roses signifying the special day, yet to her it only showed the lack of crimson love in her heart for Jeremy. Did she love him as a friend? Sure. But as a soon-to-be husband, not anymore. Never to be exact, before she had tried to convince herself that she adored him to death, that wherever he goes, she goes too. But even through clouds of persuasion, her real emotions, her lust for the man of her dreams broke her apart inside. She wanted him, yet her soul was glued to another's.
She wanted Avi. But she couldn't have him.
There were a few knocks on the door. Kirstie flashed a fake smile to the mirror again, as she walked over to open the door, her vast shimmering train swaying against the wooden floor. She stood bare-footed, gasping when she turned to door knob, revealing Avi Kaplan with a bouquet of red roses, her favorites, unlike the tacky, discolored ones in her curls.
"Avi," her voice was hoarse, evident that she had been crying. She tried to hide it by coughing, but it was too late. Avi discovered her sadness upon this supposedly pleasant day.
"Kirstie," Avi took her hand into his own, placing a kiss onto the soft flesh.
Kirstie immediately felt numb. She didn't know what was happening, except that in a few minutes she would belong to someone other than the man right beside. Belong to someone else, not to Avi Kaplan.
"Say something," Kirstie told herself aloud, as Avi frowned in confusion.
What could he possibly say to her, besides the words in his heart for years? The words that used to flow out of his mouth, as she'd giggle and repeat them as well. The words that she now told another man, the man she was marrying today. The words that could recall so many fond memories, but bring recoiling ones as well.
I love you, Kirstie.
But it was too late. For she was getting married to someone else and not him. So it would be out of place for him to say that.
"I'm sorry, I..." Kirstie began, stammering when she realized she said that aloud. Wedding day jitters must have gotten to her.
Through all these years, they were both still learning to love, only to fall.
"I'm sorry for everything," Kirstie said finally, shattering the icy silence in the room, as they both stood staring at each other's beauty.
Emerald orbs, hazel lakes, both brimming with regret and broken tears. Lips both pursed, about to say something at the same time. Yet both giving up at the same time.
