"No. Absolutely not."

Gregor sighed. "Mom, this is important! I miss her!"

Gregor's mom shook her head. "No. We're done with New York. That's part of the reason we moved to Virginia."

"She's done so much for us," Gregor said. "She misses us, too. She told us she wanted us to stay over winter break."

"Grace, can I talk to you?" Gregor's dad asked. Gregor's mom nodded, and they walked into their room, shutting the door behind them.

Gregor looked at Lizzie with worried eyes.

"What if she doesn't let us go?" Lizzie was starting to panic again.

"Calm down, it'll be okay," Gregor replied. "They will let us go."

"Mom's very adamant about the Underland. She wants us to have nothing to do with it. What if we can't go?"

Gregor sighed. "Then I guess we'll have to sneak out. Leave them a note or something."

Lizzie gasped. "You can't be serious! That's... that's... we can't just..."

"Do you want to see Ripred or not?" Gregor snapped.

"Keep your voice down!" Lizzie whisper-yelled. "Of course I do! But we can't just... sneak off to New York!"

"We could take the subway."

"No, Gregor!" Lizzie's breathing got more rapid, and Gregor could tell she might have a panic attack soon.

"Lizzie..." Gregor sighed, grabbing her hands and pulling her over to the couch. They sat down. "Listen. Nothing bad is going to happen to you, alright? Mom and Dad will let us go."

Just like that, Gregor's parents stepped out of their bedroom. Gregor's mom was obviously very upset, but Gregor's dad seemed as cool as a cucumber.

"We have decided to let you go," Gregor's dad said, "under one condition. Don't you even THINK about going back to the Underland. Mrs. Cormaci will make sure you stay in her sight at all times."

Lizzie nearly burst into tears at this, but she managed to keep herself under control. She walked out of the room as if nothing had happened.

"Thank you," Gregor responded. "Um, will Lizzie and Boots be going?"

"Why? Are they needed for some prophecy again?" Gregor's mom replied sarcastically.

"No! We're not going to the Underland!" Gregor exclaimed. "I just want to know if they're going."

Gregor's dad sighed. "Look, with Lizzie's panic attacks, and Boots being only three and a half years old, I just... I don't know. We'll have to talk to Mrs. Cormaci about it."

"I'll take care of them," Gregor replied. "Look, it won't be the same without them. They both miss Mrs. Cormaci as much as I do."

Gregor's mom rolled her eyes. "Boots is too young to miss anyone except that cockroach. What's his name? Temp?"

"Of course she misses him!" Gregor shouted. "The same way Lizzie misses Ripred, and I miss Luxa! But we're not going to do anything stupid!"

Gregor's mom sighed. "Look, I trust you. I do. Who I don't trust are those Underlanders. I like them, and they took good care of me. But it's over. I don't want to go back. And I don't want you to go back either."

Gregor nodded. "I understand. We won't go back." It hurt his heart to lie to his parents, but he knew he had no other choice. Telling his parents about the new prophecy would only make them even more protective.
