"Hey, Stevie, it's me again. You haven't picked up the first fifteen times or so, I guess you're not going to do so now. I just want you to know that what I told you before, you know... I meant it. I love you and I had no plan. I didn't think we were going to end up in bed together again. I should have told you before, I know that, but I knew it would hurt you and I'm sure telling you after hurt you way worse. I'm sorry. I keep saying that, I know, but I am sorry. You have every right to be angry at me, I'm mad at myself too. Please, please let me see you, so we can talk in person. I feel like I'm going crazy, talking to myself. Please, baby, just let me in. I'm sorry."
Sighing heavily, Stevie deleted the message. Lindsey had been trying to reach her for over a week now, but she refused to talk to him or see him. He acted like a real jerk and she didn't understand what did she do to deserve that. He should have told her about the pregnancy sooner. Stevie didn't know how far along Kristen was, but Lindsey should have been honest with her. She definitely wouldn't have slept with him, she wouldn't have let him kiss her, she probably wouldn't have even let him be a part of her record.
Meanwhile, Lindsey was brooding in his home studio. He couldn't believe himself. Kristen was over five months pregnant, Lindsey had so many opportunities to talk to Stevie. But no, he decided to fall in love with her instead. He allowed himself to feel for her again, knowing that he was about to become a father, he was going to become a family man. Various scenarios played out in Lindsey's mind. He didn't have to be with Kristen to be a father to their child. If the two of them were honest with each other, there wasn't much love between them. Sure they cared for each other, but neither of them was genuinely in love. However, if he brought this up with Stevie, Lindsey also knew that she would call him insane and tell him to get the hell out. Again.
Lindsey honestly thought he would never find himself in a situation like that again. Or at least he hoped that his and Stevie's relationship was in the past. Clearly, he was wrong. All it took for him was to spend a little time with her and he was ready to leave his pregnant girlfriend.
"Idiot." Lindsey murmured under his breath to an empty room.
"Who are you talking to?"
Lindsey faced Kristen, standing in the doorway. He didn't hear her coming in. "No one, ignore me."
"Dinner is ready. Are you coming up?" She asked, frowning slightly at his appearance. She didn't know what happened, but she hadn't seen him take a shower or shave off his stubble for days. He was with a drink in hand more often than not.
"I guess." Lindsey shrugged, blowing out a deep breath through puffed cheeks.
Lindsey slumped down on a chair at the kitchen table, resting his elbows on it, his head in his hands. He felt a headache coming. Maybe he should have stayed in the basement, his safe place. There was only one thing Lindsey hoped for at that moment.
"What's up with you?" Kristen asked, crushing that hope of his.
"Nothing." Lindsey shrugged. "Don't know what you're talking about."
She rolled her eyes, shaking her head too. "You're acting like such a child."
"No one's forcing you to deal with me."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Kristen frowned and Lindsey just shrugged again.
They ate dinner in silence after that. Well, Kristen did, Lindsey mostly pushed the food around on his plate. When he was ready to get up and leave, the phone rang. His heart immediately started beating faster, but he was a fool to hope it was Stevie. Why would she want to talk to him now?
Kristen pushed her chair out, but Lindsey was quicker as he jumped to his feet and practically ran to answer the phone. His heart sank, it wasn't Stevie. Instead he heard the voice of her assistant, Karen.
"What do you mean, she's leaving?... Where? For how long?... Of course, I want to know!... Give the phone to Stevie... You're lying, I know she's there... But- but how could she just leave without saying goodbye?... Is she by herself?... You know, you always know everything about Stevie... Yeah, I guess it is my own fault..."
Karen didn't share any more details. Saying goodbye Lindsey hung up. He could tell Kristen was clearly confused by what had just happened, but Lindsey had no intention of explaining any of it to her. Without a word, he left her alone.
