Lindsey was convinced he had another son, with Stevie. A child, who thought of another man as his father. Besides being angry with Stevie for everything else, now he had one more major reason to be mad at her. And why did she go all crazy, when he asked? Why would she want to keep their child away from him? Didn't she think Lindsey was a good enough father, was Mark just that much better? The thought of him made Lindsey's face twist in disgust.
In a way Lindsey blamed himself as well. If Kristen hadn't come into his life, they wouldn't be here right now. Stevie wouldn't have had to run away and meet someone else. On the other hand, Lindsey couldn't have known that there still were feelings between the two of them, he couldn't have known that they'd reconcile, ever, and he definitely would never have dreamed of them being able to have kids anymore. That was a huge deal for Lindsey. His life had been so hectic, he gad never even stopped to think about fatherhood until it just happened. He didn't have a choice or a say, he was going to become a father and he truly was happy about it. However, things could have turned out differently, he could have had it all, he believed, if only he'd spoken to Stevie sooner. Maybe he would have been able to convince her that he could be a father to Will without being together with Kristen. Or maybe he was only dreaming. A lot of could have, would have, should have...
And now, Lindsey didn't really have anything, anyone. After the humiliation at the wedding, Kristen packed her things and took William to her parents. Lindsey knew he had to give her some space, but he already missed his son. Not only the boy, but his unborn daughter, too. He hoped Kristen would soften up at least to let him see his child soon.
Lindsey wasn't surprised he hadn't heard from Stevie in almost a week now. She really seemed like she had no intention of reaching out to him once he left. He wasn't going to give up so easily though, he only needed to sober up first.
The phone started ringing and Lindsey groaned, he had to get up to his feet to answer and he wasn't feeling like it in his state, half a joint still burning between his fingers. However, the sound seemed so loud and annoying, he gave in. He didn't recognize the voice at first, well until the man introduced himself. Mark. Why would Mark be calling him? Maybe to rub it in Lindsey's face that he know had everything Lindsey'd ever wanted? It wasn't that. Mark wanted to speak to Lindsey. He said, he couldn't do it over the phone. It almost made Lindsey sick just giving the man his home address.
Lindsey didn't know when Mark was supposed to come, he said, later. For some reason, he felt anxious and the time seemed to stand still as he waited. Mark's later turned out to be past 8 in the evening. Lindsey wanted to say something about it just because, but it's not like he had anywhere to be or anything to do.
"So, why are you here?" Lindsey wasn't about to small talk, folding his arms over his chest. He hated to admit it to himself, but he felt slightly intimidated. He caught his own reflection in the mirror, he hardly resembled himself and then there was Mark.
"I understand that I'm probably the last person you want to see, but-"
"Look, I don't have the patience. You wanted to tell me something, you're here, so tell me."
Mark didn't seem fazed. "First of all, I want you to know that Stevie did what she thought was best at the time. Neither of us even imagined that things would go as far as they have. She doesn't know I'm here and what I'm about to say might hurt our relationship, but I think you have the right to know. I would want to know."
Lindsey held his breath, his heart beating faster. He already knew. "Tell me."
"When I met Stevie, while she was staying with Mick, she was already pregnant. I might have been there for Theo since he was born, but I'm not his biological father." Mark paused, realizing that everything was about to change. "You are, Lindsey."
