Today in this sneak peek, I will be talking about some of the arcs featured in Sing It Loud.
John's Obsession Arc
This arc features Ariana and her posse heading off to Los Angeles upon actress Liliana Cruz' request. There, they meet her agent John Price, who has an unhealthy obsession with Ariana herself. Things escalate when he kisses Ariana against her will and a reporter photographs the incident, thinking they are in love. A rumor about John and Ariana being a couple circulates thanks to the tabloids, enraging Ariana. She vows to put an end to the rumors once and for all.
This arc deals with sexual assault in the form of unwanted kissing. I want to tackle social issues in this series. I am a female and I want to empower women by writing female characters who stand up for themselves. In this arc, people believe that Ariana was "asking for it", which is not okay. They also say that since Ariana was wearing a short skirt, she was "asking for it". That is not right. Women should not feel bad for what they choose to wear. I would rant about stuff like this, but this is not Team Skull Mia's Base.
I Am Woman Arc
In this arc, Ariana gets a guest role in the ever popular I Am Woman TV series, created by Santiago Sanchez. At a party, Santiago asks Ariana to come with him into a room alone. Ariana goes with him, only to be touched inappropriately. Ariana then learns about Santiago sexually abusing the actresses in his show, which results in an ugly court case.
This arc also deals with sexual assault on a whole new level. This is based off the Harvey Weinstein scandal. This also features a bit of the #metoo movement, where sexual assault survivors share their stories in hopes of combating rape culture. I think this is a great way to empower women and show that they are assertive, which is what I look for in people.
LeAnn's Jealousy Arc
This arc will focus on Ariana's rival LeAnn Michelson, who is seeking redemption for her past actions. However, Ariana thinks she is not sincere about it. As LeAnn tries to better herself, she tries reaching out to her former agent Scarlet Johnson, who quit due to her cruelty, and her ex-bestie Julia Stanford. This arc also reveals why LeAnn hates Ariana so much.
I believe LeAnn deserves redemption because it makes her more realistic. I also want to show the power of forgiveness as Ariana struggles to reconcile with LeAnn. I also want to challenge myself with writing characters who seek redemption. This is a part of LeAnn's character arc as she goes from immature teenager to redeemed young adult.
Esau's Big Break Arc
This arc introduces Esau Jepson, a struggling actor trying to land a role in the Kennedy Center's plays. Ariana decides to help him, but must put up with his controlling girlfriend Athena Mitchell. Esau finds himself in a love triangle between Athena and Ariana, but Athena won't let him go so easily.
This is a little cliche, but this is a rough draft. I also want to feature likable male characters (Joseph and Gale aren't enough, btw) that are realistic. This is the beginning of Esau's character arc. At this point in time, he is unmotivated and insecure about his abilities. This also serves as somewhat of a parallel to Ariana's character arc. I like to juxtapose my characters to show how they are different (a good example of this is Jojo Pullman and Christian Gates from Agent Jane Doe) so I continue doing this in my stories.
