The walk home was breezy and reaching the door of my apartment, I hear a bark and curse that I forgot all about Billy. Oh he's gonna kill me

He already knows I'm home so I just walk in and smile sheepishly

"Hey boy, you miss me"
He makes an irritated sound and turns his back to walk to his doggy bed.

"Come on, I promise I didn't forget you; just lost track of time", I carry him up and scratch his fur trying to be apologetic but he rebuffs me.

Fast forward to ten shots of ice cream and a sing along marathon, my dog and I are best friends again.
Two minutes past ten and I get a call from Lillian; imagine my surprise when I picked up

"Hey Lilly, how you feeling? Sorry I haven't called; been held up", I say in a suspicious high tone

"I still feel awful even after eight hours of non stop crying and sleeping. I need to go out now or I'll die"

Yikes, her voice is terrible and she sounds like she could die

"It's late. Where could you possibly go by this time all by yourself? I'm still shocked you remember me and my number. I mean you just met me and you......"

"You know what? Let's meet"

"Again? Where exactly?"
I'm really curious at what she was getting at so I shut up and listen

"I know a cool club about two blocks from the cafe we met; can you please meet me there? I'm in dire need of company, we'll have some drinks and talk real talk not sappy talk", she says and I chuckle at the last part.

"Fine, meet you there in a few but just you know, you are sappy talking me into this", I hear her laugh at the other end.
After the call, Billy looks up at me and barks,
"Believe me, I was only thinking of ice cream shots"

As I dress up to meet Lillian, I realize that I have had just one friend all along and no one else.
Maybe I should branch out a lil.

The club is really on point and even though I don't visit clubs much, I know when it's lit. Lillian and I have a  couple of shots and stare at dancers cos neither of us was in the mood. It's loud but the side bar is bearable.

"I am really sorry about your parents and your boyfriend needs a death penalty", I say in a meek voice

She shrinks a bit but shakes it off and says, "It's a tragedy that I never thought could happen to me and I can't believe Harry would do that to me but shit happens right? Just have to get through the burial and continue life alone I guess"
She chunks another drink down and another and another, then looks at me and says,
"I did promise no sappy talk right, let's lighten up a little. What is your own family like?"

I frown at the topic but determined to cheer her up, I broach the topic
"Well, I have a father and a mother and a sister"
She rolls her eyes

"Okay, I have a twin named Jenn and she's annoying. My parents live alone now. We don't talk much but we are still family; pushiness and all", I say with a half smile

"Seems you don't talk about them much do you?"
"Well, when you are termed unserious with no future by people supposed to help you grow, you don't talk about them much do you?"

"Yikes, that bad huh?"
I wiggled my eyebrows and took another shot. Later, Lillian decided to loosen up on the dance floor to 'shake it up'. I just nodded but I think she meant dance.

Shortly, I hear a grunted voice say, "Hey sweet shot, lemme buy you a drink and make you feel better"

I don't even look up but I have seven witty comments to throw at this specimen. I look up to dish out a cool insult until I saw the hideous sight before me. I tolerate all God's creations are wonderfully made; Lord forgive me but this dude is dead on ugly. He had hair in all places, a wrinkled face and piercing. I also see a pot belly, fat hands and a weird smile.

I couldn't hold myself and burst into laughing. He just looked at me weirdly, came closer and smirked
"Yeah, I could deal with a little crazy"

"I don't think you can deal with this crazy. I'm with someone here, so move along"

I stare at him coldly and take another drink. I always make sure not to get tipsy in this places for reasons like this; plus who knows what Lily might do in that aspect.

The guy didn't get the message and thought the answer was to start groping me; I pushed him back and reiterate my first statement in a warning tone. He kept making filthy comments and laughing until...

"The lady said she's not interested, why don't you leave her alone", a  voice from behind me
"Yeah tell him", I say and drag my hand from the pervert.

The big guy tried to engage the voice in a brawl but they only shared stares that ended the whole thing.
Probably because of bouncers and stuff

It made me whip my head to see who the voice was.
My eyes were like saucers to see my office boss standing in all confidence and good looks.

"You? I helped the witty maid. What are you doing here?", he asks looking as surprised as I was

Witty? Is that what they are calling me this days?

"I should be asking you the same thing. What is a rich bachelor doing in a low class club?", I ask with my eyebrows raised
He's supposed to be in a rich class club drinking expensive wine. He's dressed in a simple white shirt, some buttons down and black denim, looking like a normal person.

Smiling, he looked at me
"I'm still your boss you know. Last time we met, you said you are naturally smart. Then, answer your own question"

He is slimy
I didn't say anything. He just stared at me with a glint in his eyes and a smirk on his lips.

"Ohhh"
I stared sharply at Lillian who has her eyes on him with surprise
"You are.....you are....", she stammered

"Shawn Williams, nice to meet you", he answered with a smile and stretched his hand
I think Lillian became dumbfounded cos she only shook him but stared in amazement.
I cut the silence
" Umm, we have to get going, you even look tipsy", I gesture to her
She looked at me, blinking and smiling
Yup,drunk

We make our way out of the club and I drag my new friend while walking on the sidewalk. Just then, a car pulls over beside me and Shawn looks up at me
"I could give you a lift, you can't carry her all the way to her house like that"

Without wasting another second, I lay  Lily at the backseat and enter the front. The car is as slick as they come but still subtle.
Half way through the ride, he breaks the silence
"You didn't answer your question"
"Well I asked the question for a reason, I don't know the answer"
He smiles
"Are you drunk too cos you sound too nice unlike at the office that day?" I ask
He frowned and faced the road but still whispered, "Call it a bad day"

I couldn't help but stare at him and notice that he probably didn't want to talk about work .

"I came here to escape", he answered still looking at the road. I knew what to say but decided not to.
"I'm Jessica by the way"
"Shawn"

We reached my apartment building and he helped me carry Lily up since I had no idea where she lived.

"Nice apartment you got here", he commented. Lily had been put to bed and Billy too sleepy to notice the strange man
" I'm sure you're used to nice and more. I wonder why I let you into my house, I barely know you. For all I know, you could have a malicious obsession for human brains", I busied myself with arranging the counter

"Not to worry, you are safe. My scanner doesn't detect any form of intelligence"
I glance sharply at him to see a visible smile
"What would you have?"
"Coffee please, black"

A long night, it is
