Part Eight: No outing with the boss?

Normal clichés start with the boss falling in love with the maid and things poofing up from there but in this case; I had been on the job for three days and I hadn't seen Shawn.
It's weird that I have a strong feeling to meet him again, at least the cool him but nothing.

At the maison, things we're still boring except for the preparation of the banquet ; go to work, see Agatha's ugly face, say hi to Madeline, receive glares from other servants, learn a dish or two from the cook and of course, more work.

Working at the office wasn't as frequent because the job was kinda covered but I still go there to breath fresh maid air; the helpers here are friendly.

Entering the office building and greeting Precious, the ground floor receptionist is a usual routine. Today, her dad got sick but he's getting better, I wish her luck and ding myself up some floors.
There, I find comfort with the cleaning community. Stella's daughter Ann just graduated from the nursery class and Sue going on dates now. Some stories are fun, some are gloomy and others are just chatty.

"So Jess, any special someone in your life?", Joe asks me with a big grin

"Well, no. At least not since high school; dated a guy named Beck, sore loser then; now he owns his own stadium and sports centre", I answer nonchalantly

"You follow him up or what? I bet you wish you still had him", Joe smiles

" Nahh, found out and the guy is a lousy kisser. That can't change", I say
Everyone had a good laugh at that one, then shift changes. People go about their daily life, most of them have other jobs so I just carry along.

Later, I return to the big house and the shifts changed too. As my shift over, I pack up my stuff, try a little truffle in the kitchen and head for the door. On my way out, I hear my name being called, I halt and analyse the voice and relax that it's not Agatha.

Looking back, I see Madam Grace up a balcony and she smiles brightly and this illuminates her tired face.
"Hello ma'am"

" Hello dear, how are you today?"

" I'm very well. Do you need anything ma'am?"

"A little company will be nice", she says with a smile

"I'll come into the house then, probably in your room", I look up and smile back. She only nods

In her room, I get her some tea and we settle down.
" You seem like a nice girl Jessica, what do your parents do?"I hesitate slightly but I answer

"My father is a real estate agent and my mother is a baker"

"Wonderful, then you must know a little or two about these things"

"Actually, I don't. Maybe because it never occurred to me to acquaint myself with them", I relax
She says nothing

I look up at her
" You have a lovely home ma'am and guessing wonderful children too"

She laughs

"Yes yes, it's good but it gets a little lonely with the children growing up and my husband trying to show them how to grow"
She sighs
" I heard about the incident with my husband though; it was hilarious ", she laughs slightly

I raise my eyebrows for a second
Is she serious? I almost killed her husband

She seems to understand the look on my face
"Oh don't worry about it dear. When I was a new wife, I made the same mistakenly a few times. We only had laughs about it after he regained himself. Those were the days"

Her look changed to that of nostalgia and she stared out the window leading to the balcony, her soulful blue eyes searching out. Then she shook and smiled,
"The good thing is that only Damien who seems lactose intolerant but Shawn and Vivian have strong tummies"

Not knowing what to say, I just hold her hand and stare at the window. The sun is setting and the view is so breath taking. She sleeps off and I tuck her in before leaving.

Walking out of the room and into the hallway, I hear a click and a curse. I move towards the direction of the sound only to see the back of a male trying to unlock a door.

"Shit, I can't even get into my own room in this house"

"Maybe that's because you barely use it or come to the house", that's me standing by the hallway
Can't even keep your mouth shut can you?

Shawn just turned around, looked at me and let out a small smile
"Oh if it isn't my fairy godmaid coming to my rescue"

"That is not a thing. Don't make fun of my status. The keys should be downstairs, the locks have been changed", I signal him to follow me

"Great, she knows more than me. I don't tolerate insubordination from the help"

"Ohh the same help you need to find your keys; I was about to go home before my insubordination you know", I stop walking and couldn't help the devious grin growing on my face
Sucker for a boss. Now beg me sir

"You can go, I can always crash on the sofas you know, they are as good as beds but when I wake up, I might tell about the help I was deprived"

I close my eyes as if just received a sharp blow and keep walking. Thank God my back is facing him. I show him the keys and begin moving away to the exit.

"Aren't you going to get them", he asks
"Really? You can get them yourself. It's just there hanging, grab it and help yourself", I say starting to get pissed

His face is then plain
"Then what are we paying you for?"

Why you little piece of...
I suck in breath, walk up to the board, take the keys and put it on the counter next to him; then I stand back and say,
"Happy now?"

"Not quite, who will open my door?", he answers with a baby voice
"Seriously, this is getting childish", I roll my eyes

"Seriously, you started it. You always think you can outsmart people. You can't outsmart some", he said it like an achievement

"That's cocky on so many levels, I'm leaving"
I've already tried to leave this house like five times today. I'm tired

He called me back and asked for a favour
"At least, stay and have dinner with me"
"If all that was your way of asking me to have dinner with you, it was a long process", I answer

I'm hungry though, haven't eaten anything meaningful today.

"But it was worth it"

I can only smile
After heating up some stir fry chicken and rice, I serve it up while he freshens up
The food smelled so good before the actual tasting. He appreciated it too as he moaned after the first bite
"Hungry much", I say

"You have no idea, work is so stressful that I forget to eat"

"Don't forget then. Eating helps for strength and work development",

"You just sounded like a commercial, you don't understand, it gets to a point where I don't want to work anymore"

After that, he keeps shut and finishes his food. I move to clear the plates but he had that in mind too and our hands brushed each other. I stared at him and removed my hand.

You are shutting out

Picking up my bag, I headed for the door and only turned to say
"Thank you for dinner. Good night"

He replied, " Thank you for you, good night"
