Shawn's POV
She was the last person I expected to see in that club and after she left the club with her friend, I felt an urge to follow her and probably help. Circling out of the parking space, I see her struggling with her drunk friend,
"I could give you a lift, you can't carry her all the way to her house like that"
At first, I was surprised at how fast she agreed to my help but later thought it that she actually needed the help. The ride was calm and slow, she giving me directions and admiring the car while her friend slept at the back.
As the silence became unbearable, I decided to say something
"You didn't answer your question""Well I asked the question for a reason, I don't know the answer", she replies
I couldn't help but smile
So she admits she doesn't know it all"Are you drunk too cos you sound too nice unlike at the office that day?" she asks with sheer curiosity
I frown at the thought of work and face the road.
I whisper to her, "Call it a bad day"Her staring didn't help matters, it felt like she was trying to read me. I began to grow uncomfortable but still manage to talk
"I came here to escape", I say still looking at the road. She hesitated in her answer then decided not to say anything.
" I'm Jessica by the way "
"Shawn"We reached the apartment building and I helped carry her friend up since their friendship sounded complicated.
Closely examining her apartment caused to appreciate how she made it her space. There were several frame paintings of wild life on the walls, embroidered pillows on the bed and goofy pictures by her bedside table.
"Nice apartment you got here", I commented. I also noticed she had a dog who just lay on the doggy bed sleeping.
" I'm sure you're used to nice and more. I wonder why I let you into my house, I barely know you. For all I know, you could have a malicious obsession for human brains", she said while clearing the kitchen counter.
"Not to worry, you are safe. My scanner doesn't detect any form of intelligence", I replied almost immediately
She glanced sharply at me to see me smiling. I'm guessing out of hospitality, she asked
"What would you have?"
I resolved to humour her
"Coffee please, black"She faced me with two mugs filled with hot coffee and sat on the couch next to me. Even the mugs had 'Caffeine Lord' written on it
I sipped the coffee and dropped the mug on a stool.
"I should better get going, it's late and you need your beauty sleep",
She looked at me as if ready to slap me
"Wait a sec, you got me to brew hot caffeine and drink it and now you want to leave me. How will I get beauty sleep with caffeine in my blood""Technically, I asked for coffee. Didn't tell you to drink it too", then I pointed at the inscription on the mugs.
I stifled my laughterThe look on her face was priceless; she turned red at first with embarrassment then with anger
"How dare you put this on me. I was being hospitable and you rubbished it"
She made teasing her so easy, I couldn't help it. Studying her carefully, her dark hair which was in a bun, now looked messy, she had removed her jacket and was currently on a long sleeved flair shirt. She had a necklace with a half moon pendant."I don't appreciate you looking at me like that"
I snapped out of it and noticed she was calm from her previous outburst on hospitality. It was still funny though"So you clean for a living", I figured I'd just clear the air
" Well, not my dream job but that's what I do"
"Why?"
"Because my life has been hard, so I took up the next endurable thing", she replied with a sad smile
"Okay, but if it's not what you want. What do you want?"
She shifted on the couch to stare at me
"It's easy for you to say Office Boss, you have it all, from companies to chain of restaurants. Your family is loaded"
I kept a straight face but eyebrows raised
"Office Boss?"
"Yes, that's what I said"
"No one calls me that"
She blinked and thought of what to say
"How would you know what people call you? You are high up and employees can say anything"I smirked
"Trust me, if people were calling me that, I would know. I have a feeling you made it up"
She kept mute, eyes looking up and then blinking, sign that she was thinking of the best thing to say.
"And what if I did"My expression changed to a dark one
"Then I'll have you arrested for inappropriate word mixing and unauthorized nicknaming"Her eyes became wide
Then we both burst into laughter. The laughter was long and I felt free.
Free to express and no formality whatsoeverShe continued laughing and I watched her
"Sorry boss but you are stupid. Did you just make that up? Wow, you are worse than I am"
I glanced at my watch and realized that it was really late. She knew the next thing to say
"Yes, you can go. Thanks anyway, you are not so bad"
I chuckled
"Wish I can say the same for you""Where am I?"
We turned to see Lillian walking into the room with a confused look and a messy hair.
"Hey Lily, how you feeling?", Jess asked her
" Like ass and drunk but I'll be fine. Thanks for today Jess"
"You mean yesterday", I sayShe finally noticed me and stood still like in the club
" Shawn.... Williams, you are here, in front of me", she sounded dazed
"Yes I am and so is Jessica but I doubt if she's famous", I grin
Jess rolls her eyes and gives Lily a cup of coffee. Lily keeps looking at me like I fell out of the sky but finally snaps out of it after taking the first sip."Geez, how much did I have to drink?", Lily asked while touching her head
"You tell me", Jess replied
Just then, Lily exclaims,"I have to be at work in the next 6 hours. I think I need to head home and at least get this alcohol stench off me"
I agree,"Well I could give you a ride, I'm heading out", I offer
"Oh thanks so much, you are nicer than I expected. Are you Jess' friend?", she asks looking back and forth from my face and Jess'Jess stands up and moves the mugs to the side and fake smiles
"I think we agree that we all need sleep. So I'll walk you guys down"I stand up and chuckle
"Wow, now you even chase your visitors away for sleep. Such hospitality"
I face the door but stylishly turn to see her expression. She glowered but she tried to calm herself before Lily turned to her.
She spoke through her teeth
"Then I'll be polite. Can you go home now?"The grin on my face was as wide as the River Nile now. Lily just stared very confused but kept mute.
After saying our goodbyes, I drove Lily home but not without asking her about her friendship with Jess
She blinked at me and said"I just met Jess yesterday......", with that, she narrated the events of the previous day.
"Oh, I'm really sorry about your parents. Do you have siblings?"
"No, only child", I knew her mood would change but I changed the topic
"Jess was that encompassing to you"
"Well, at first, she sounded stiff but got over it and tried to help me the way she could. I'll grieve in my own way; the club idea was mine...... Not my best idea", she crunched her faceShe still felt sick so I let her be but kept thinking of her new friend.
