My first night after the events of the Smithsonian is a calm I've needed. I sit at the desk and take a nice, long, deep breath. I sigh and lean back. Soon, everyone comes to life. Ahkmenrah is the first to visit me after Teddy says his hello. "Kamilah! What happened?!" I rushes over. I place my finger over the white gauze on my forehead.
"I'm fine," I laugh. "Actually, this reminds me. I'll be right back," I get up and limp to the security room. I need to change my bandage. I grab my medical supplies from my locker and set them on the desk. I undo my belt and pants before pulling them down. I sit up on the desk and begin to unravel my wound. I put gauze over the opening of the disinfectant before taking a deep breath. "This is going to suck," I say to myself before pressing the damp cloth against my wound. I let a brief yell. Suddenly, the door flies open and Ahkmenrah barges in. He looks around the room before looking back at me. He notices that I'm in my underwear and uniform top. He jerks his hand up and covers his eyes.
"Sorry! So sorry! I just- I uh-" he begins searching for an explanation and I only laugh.
"It's fine, Ahk. I'm just dressing my wounds," I explain.
"As in plural? I thought it was just-" he moves his hand to point to his forehead before covering his eyes again.
"I actually could use a hand," I chuckle.
"Right, okay," I walks over still covering his eyes. He bumps into the chair and almost falls. He catches himself and finally reaches me. "What do I do?" he still keeps his eyes covered. I laugh and put my hand over his, uncovering his eyes.
"First off, you need both hands. I just need you to take this," I hand him the wrap and gauze patch, "and wrap up my leg while I take of the other," I explain.
"Right," He nervously laughs. "I knew that," he nods, lying. He begins to do his job while I do mine. "How did this happen anyways?" he asks.
"Well, this one," I point to my forehead, "is from one of Al Capone's henchmen. The other is from Kahmunrah," I shrug.
He looks up at me, worried. "Brother? He did this to you?" he asks.
"Yeah. Then again, it was my fault. I wasn't paying attention. He was trying to raise an army out of the Duat. I had him on the ground, defeated. I got distracted and well, he stabbed me," I tape the new bandage down. He looks unsure and angry. "Look, it's okay. Alright?" I place my hand on his face. He just stares into my eyes. "It's alright," I smile. I take my leg from him and finish up the wrapping. "A hand?" I try to climb off the desk. He grabs my hips and helps me down, but he doesn't let go. "Thank you," I smile again. He stares at me for a moment more before kissing my forehead.
"I'm just happy you're safe," he whispers, resting his chin on my forehead.
An extreme blush covers my cheeks. "We should probably get out there. People will be wondering where we are," I laugh awkwardly. He agrees and leaves. I pull my pants back on and straighten my uniform before walking out as well.
"I want you to head the night program," Dr. McPhee says to me. I stay sitting in my chair. "You definitely know more about these exhibits than any one here," he smiles at me.
"Dr. McPhee. I appreciate the offer, but I simply can't take on such a big job on my own. Who would be security?" I ask.
"I've already spoken to many people. You won't be heading it yourself. It's a partnership. With Mr. Daley," he instructs. "You will both be working as security, but also pulling the strings behind the scenes," I laugh.
"No way. Of course!" I jump up. I start rapidly shaking his hand. "Thank you, thank you. This is amazing!" I laugh again. I let go of his hand, straighten myself out, and clear my throat. "I won't let you down," I nod before leaving his office.
