Larry looks at the GPS, then down the hall. "Tonight's gonna be a long night," I whisper to Ahkmenrah. He nods in agreement.
"Guys! I think we're going to have to cut through Asia!" Larry calls out. Lancelot runs off.
"Not a clue," Teddy says.
"None," Ahk raises his brows. We begin to meet up with Larry. We all walk into Asia. I look around the room in awe.
"So beautiful," I note. Garuda slides in front of us.
"Oh, hey, guy. We're just passing through," Larry says. Garuda looks back and starts chittering in protest.
"It's a Garuda from Tibet," Teddy says.
"Garuda. Khagesvara. Suparna. Suvarnakaya," I list his other names.
"Nagantaka," Cam adds.
"A Garuda? Okay. Hi, Garuda. How are you doing?" Larry asks. He chitters some more. "Okay, great," Larry tries to walk past, but he stops him. "Can we just... All right. You know what, buddy? We just got to get through. I don't have time. Please," He tries, but Garuda still protests. I watch as they dart back and forth. "You know what, I'm not going to play this game with you. We gotta go through," As we pass by him, I lean down to Garuda.
"You have to excuse my friend," I say in Tibetan.
"Thank you," Cam adds, speaking in the same language. I smile and nod at her.
"Get back," Larry says. I stay leaned down to the mythical bird creature, so Ahk grabs my hand and pulls me out of the way. I land against his chest. He wraps his arms around me in reflex.
"A dragon," Lancelot says excitedly.
"No. It's not a dragon. It's a... Xiangliu," I look up and separate myself from the warm body holding me.
"That's not good," I say to Ahk.
"Mythical snake demon," Larry adds.
"Well, it looks like a dragon. I say we kill it," Lancelot says.
"What? No. It's asleep," Larry says.
"You're right. It's not very sporting to kill it while it's asleep. Let's wake it up, then kill it. I shall go first and I shall take the boy," Lancelot says.
"What are you... No. What? You're not gonna take the boy," Larry argues.
"Why not?"
"Because he's a boy!"
"Larry, there comes a time in every man's life when he must slay his own dragon. All right?"
"Well, not this kid. He still hasn't finished all his thank you notes from his Bar Mitzvah, and anyway, that's just... that's a... it's an expression," Larry says.
"Well, not where I come from," Lancelot shakes his head.
"Well he's not going to slay his dragon right now. We're going to go around it. We're going to go around it right now, or else I'm gonna lose the signal. Come on," Larry says. We all follow him into the room. The tablet starts to glow green and Ahk falls over again. Larry and I both catch him.
"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country," Teddy loudly says.
"Teddy! Shh! Here, take him," Larry hands me Ahk and I gently being him to the floor. Ahk has a panicked look on his face.
"Shh. Shh. It's okay. You're going to be okay. Look at me," I grab his face.
"Dad!" Nick yells out. I see Cam and Nick getting attacked by one of the snakes nine heads."Nicky!" Larry yells out.
"I'm sorry. I love you! You'll be fine!" I just realized I said a certain three words for the first time. I kiss Ahkmenrah before rushing over to my cousin. As I dodge the snake heads, Lancelot's sword swings right across my abdomen. I hear a tearing sound and feel a slight pinch. Ignoring it, I rush over to Cam. I grab my collapsible Bo staff out of my waist band and make it full size. I fight off one of the snake's heads, standing in front of my cousin.
"The only thing to fear is fear itself!" Teddy yells again.
"Follow me!" I yell to Cam. I begin to lead her through the room. Once standing behind Teddy, I leave Cam in safety. I continue to fight the snake. Finally, it's head just falls to the ground. I bend over and take a few deep breaths.
"Kamilah!" Cam yells out. She runs over and pulls me into a big hug.
"Watch it, Cam," I sigh. I pull back to see Ahk's eyes on me. He glances down to my abdomen and I do too. My sweater is ripped and there's a bit of blood at the tear. I see the look on his face as he starts to rush over. "No, no. No, Ahk, I'm fine," I hold my hands up. He starts investigating the tear.
"Do you hurt?" He asks, worried look on my face. I shake my head and pull off my sweater. Thankfully, I wore a black shirt underneath it.
"It's just a tear and tiny scratch," I laugh. "I'm barely even bleeding," I look at him. He looks at the wound then back at my face. He sighs heavily and closes his eyes.
"How did this happen?" He asks.
"It's my fault. I wasn't paying attention, but it's okay. I'm fine," I laugh.
"Do not take the fall for my mistake," Lancelot speaks up.
"It was you?" Ahk asks him. I sense the anger in his voice.
"I should have been more careful with my blade. I could've killed her," he owns up to it.
"No, no. Ahkmenrah, look at me," I lightly grab his chin and turn his attention to me. The anger quickly falls from his face. "I'm okay. I've been through worse, remember. We don't have the time to fight against each other right now," I say, shaking my head. "Right?"
"Right. I'm sorry," He says softly. He reaches up and touches the necklace around my neck. He didn't know I wore it today. I stand on my toes and kiss his forehead.
"It's fine, dear," I say softly. I grab the tablet from his hands. I investigate it closely. "It's getting worse. Larry," I say sadly. We all walk over to him as he pulls his phone out from under the snake's body.
"How are we going to find them now?" Ahk asks.
"Lawrence. I fear we've turned a corner. I'm becoming wax again, son," Teddy says.
"Larry. You know what this means," I sigh. He nods at me.
"All right, we'll look for them later. We gotta get to Egypt now," Larry turns and we all follow him out.
"Wait, shouldn't we keep looking for Jed and Octavius?" Nick speaks up.
"Nick is right. A true knight never shirks his duties," Lancelot says. We all keep walking out of the room. We make our way to Egypt.
"This is it," Larry says.
"Perhaps I should accompany you in," Lancelot says. I look up at Ahk and he's looking around with a smile.
"No, I, uh.. I think we got it from here," Larry says.
"Really?" Lancelot asks.
"Yeah, no. We're good," Larry nods.
"Right, well, friends, Larry, clown-faced keeper of the magic tablet, I shall never forget your bravery nor your jests," Larry and Lancelot shake hands.
"Bye," Larry says. We all turn and rush off.
"I shall not say good-bye-" Larry cuts Lancelot off.
"I am. I'm gonna say good-bye. I have to go. I'm sorry. I'll see you," we turn to leave again. Ahk looks genuinely happy to be here.
"I haven't seen these walls for many a moon," he says with a grin. Our hands stay intertwined as we walk. I notice the open sarcophagi on the floor.
"Ahkmen?!" A women's voice says.
Ahk drops my hand and has a surprised look on his face. "Mother," he says. A beautiful woman rushes over and he steps up to meet her. Her arms wrap around her son and she looks as if she's about to cry. I clasp my empty hands in front of me, watching with a smile. A lavishly dressed man walks in. "Father," Ahkmenrah says. He stops in front of Ahk.
"Welcome home, my son," He says with a heavy voice. He then pulls him in for a hug. I can feel Ahk's happiness from here and makes me feel as though I might cry as well.
"I want you to meet my friends," Ahk gestures to us.
"I am Merenkahre, Pharaoh of the Nile and Father to the Son of the Sun," Ahkmenrah's dad introduces.
"And I am Shepseheret, the Glittering Jewel of the Nine Kingdoms," His mother says.
"And I am Larry," Larry says.
"Guardian of Brooklyn," Ahk says with a smile.
"I-I actually... I live in Manhattan now, but..." Larry says.
"I know, but it doesn't sound as cool," Ahk whispers.
"Yeah," Larry says. "We would be very honored if you could take a look at the tablet. There's something happening with it. We don't understand what it is," Larry explains.
"You are speaking with a Pharaoh. Kiss my staff," Merenkahre says. Larry, being disrespectful, blows a kiss. Merenkahre and Shepseheret look offended.
Larry tries again by kissing his fingers then tapping the staff. "Like that? Is it okay if I don't?" I hit him on the back of the head.
"What is the matter with you?" I whisper yell at him.
"You will show respect. I am the descendant of Ra, the sun god," Merenkahre announces.
"I understand that. I... and I totally respect you. I just, I don't pray to Ra, so..."
"The Egyptian Gods are the only true Gods."
"Well, we try to stay a little more open-minded. I mean, uh, Sacajawea, she honors her spiritual ancestors, and... you pray to, like, some sort of goat god, Attila, right? Yeah. I'm half-Irish, half-Jewish, so..."
"You are? I love Jews. We owned 40,000 of them," Merenkahre says.
"Such lovely people," Shepseheret says.
"Here we go," Ahk quietly says.
"They were very happy. Always singing with the candles."
"Yeah. They really weren't happy." Larry says.
"Really?" Shepseheret asks.
"No. They left. They spent about 40 years in the desert, trying to escape. Yeah. We have dinner once a year and talk about it. It's a big deal for us. Listen, could you take a look at that tablet? There's something wrong with it," Larry says. Ahk hands the tablet to his father while he grabs the staff from him. I step forward and listen close. Ahk and I exchange looks.
"It's loosing it's power," he says.
"Do you think you could, like, fix it?" Larry asks.
"To do that, I would have to divulge the secret of the tablet," He states.
"Uh... Well, that... I promise we won't tell anybody," Larry says.
"No," I drop my head.
"I'll kiss your staff," Larry tries.
"Too late," I decide to speak up this time.
"Sir," I bow to the Pharaoh and his wife. "I ask you to excuse Larry's ignorance of your customs, but this tablet is truly important, as you made it to be. He meant no disrespect by his actions and words, for he is foolishly ignorant," I say this all with my head bowed.
"No," he repeats. I nod softly and stand up straight. Shepseheret looks at the gold around my neck then back to her son. Her eyes keep darting at me.
"Father, what do you insist on keeping this to yourself?" Ahk asks.
"The secret was to be passed down to you at the proper time," he states.
"Well, it has been 4,000 years. Now seems like a good time," Ahk argues.
Merenkahre pats his son's cheek. "You were born at midnight. I was Pharaoh and I had seen wonders most men only dream of. But when I first gazed upon you, you were instantly more precious to me than all the wonders of the ancient world. I knew I could never bear to say good-bye. I commanded the High Priest to create a gift to you, my son, using all we had learned of the mysteries of the afterlife. Forged in the temple of Khonsu, God of the Moon and watcher over nighttime travelers, the Tablet of Ahkmenrah. Our tomb was designed to channel Khonsu's rays down to the tablet, rejuvenating it's powers every night. The moon God bestowed his power upon the tablet, so that as long as it bathed in his light, our family could be together forever. Not even death could part us. It's been away from Khonsu's light too long," the tablet begins to glow green again. Ahkmenrah starts to wobble in his place. I rush over and stand behind him, my hands on his sides.
"Ahkmenrah?" I ask, concerned. Shepseheret rushes over as well.
"My son! What is happening to you?" She asks. Merenkahre gives the tablet off to Larry and Ahk looses his balance. I gently bring him to the ground like before, resting his head in my lap.
"Hurry! If the tablet dies, nothing will be able to bring it back!" He yells to Larry.
I put my hand on Ahk's face. "You're going to be alright. Everything will be okay," I say quietly. He gives me a weak smile only to have it replaced by a worried look. I look back up to see Nick rush in. He walks right up to Cam.
"Lancelot! He stole the tablet!" Nick yells.
"We must help Larry," Ahk says, trying to stand up.
"You are in no condition to be rushing about," I say as he successfully stands up.
"I'll be fine," he says.
"Always were so stubborn," Shepseheret says.
I put his arm around my shoulders, allowing him to use me as a prop. "At least let me help," I say. As a group, we all make our way out. "Teddy, you go ahead and back Larry up. Cut him off at the corner outside of Asia. We'll meet back up with you in a bit," I instruct. Teddy gives me a salute.
"Of course. Stay safe, Kamilah," he nods to me. I nod back. He kisses Sacajawea's hand and gives everybody else a nod before rushing off. We all make our way in the other direction. I place my hand on Ahk's bare abdomen for extra support. I feel his heartbeat weaker than before. After a little ways, I see some familiar faces.
"Still in one piece, Gigantor!" Jed yells out. Larry gives Octavius his cape back.
"I don't get it. Why is Lancelot staying strong while we get weaker?" Teddy asks.
"It's his first night. Newborns are stronger, but it matters not. Unless we succeed, he too will be dead some the dawn," At the word dead, I look at Ahk with sad eyes.
"We can't let him leave the building. Sir, can you go back to Egypt, in case he comes through there?" Larry asks Merenkahre.
"Of course," He says.
"Nick, take Attila. Check the loading dock," Larry begins to instruct everyone.
"Got it," Nick says.
"Teddy, go to the South Wing. Cover the side doors. Take Cam with you. I got the main entrance," Larry runs off. Everyone else turns to me, waiting on instructions.
"Check every hall. He could be anywhere," I command. They nod and run off. Ahk and I both run in the same direction as Teddy. After searching, we all meet up outside the front of the museum.
"Everybody okay?" Larry asks.
"Yes, Lawrence. Attila and your boy secured the lady guard in her booth. I don't know how long it'll hold her, though," Teddy says.
"All right, we got to find Lancelot, but somebody has to make sure she doesn't get out," Larry says. Laa volunteers himself.
"Lawrence! I can't move my arms. We're becoming less useful by the minute," Teddy says. Attila then has a spill and almost falls. I watch as he freaks out about his eye. I see Ahk tense up, so I grab him to be sure.
"Is it true?" Ahk asks me quietly.
"Is what true?" I look at him confused.
"Just in case I don't make it, I need to know. What you said before going off to fight. Is it true?" He asks. I know exactly what he's talking about.
"Of course it is. Of course I love you, but we're going to fix this. Do not worry," I say, holding him close. We begin walking down the sidewalk. I watch as Ahkmenrah looks in amazement at everything. A sad thought then hits me. This will be the only time he gets to see the modern world. As Sacajawea examines paper on the ground, we hear roars and screams. We all run in the direction it's coming from. We all stop when we see the lion statues alive.
"Never run from a big cat, Lawrence," Teddy instructs.
"Gigantor, get your flashlight out. These cats wan to play!" Jed yells. I watch the spectacle in front of me. I notice a sign on the side of a bus.
"Larry!" I elbow him and point to the bus. We all make our way to the bus. I watch as two kids stare at us in surprise. I clear my throat and awkwardly glance around. I look at Ahk and he has a grin on his face.
"What's up?" Larry asks.
"We're just as God made us!" Jed yells. "Why don't you take a picture? It'll last longer," He says. The kid raises her phone and snaps a pic, but continues to stare. As we rush up to the theatre, people are running out.
"We have the right place," I say, picking up my skirt. I watch as he runs off backstage.
"Oh, yeah, no, come on up," Hugh Jackman says. I stop.
"So sorry. He gets really into the LARPing. Big fan by the way," I continue my way up the stairs.
"Hey! Give me the tablet!" Larry yells.
"Stay back. Stay back!" Lancelot yells, waving a torch around. I look at his nose and quietly wince. "What?"
"Think he's hot stuff now, huh Cam?" I whisper to her.
"Just... Your, uh... No, your, uh, your nose."
"What? What about my nose?"
"Your nose is... It's dripping. It's melting from the fire." Lancelot see it and freaks out. Ahk and I watch the argument before us. Suddenly, everything goes horrible again. I stand with Ahk as he looses his strength again.
"Larry," he calls out. I wrap around him as he goes down. "We've run out of time," I feel my eyes sting with tears. Ahk and I sit on the cold, damp floor. I hear Dexter cry out.
"You're killing them!" I yell through my tears. Cam sits next me and wraps her arm around my shoulders as I sob.
"Dexter? Dexter? Oh, no, no. No. Dexter, no. No, no. Come on, man," Larry says. I hold Ahkmenrah close to me, sobbing.
"I love you too," he says to me.
"I understand now," Lancelot says. "The monkey was the quest. It was never about the tablet. It was about them. Forgive me. It is I who have been the fool," Lancelot hands the tablet off. I sniffle and hold Ahk's head close to my chest. I lower my head, tears running down my face.
I hear a gasp beneath me and I open my eyes. All the life comes rushing back to Ahkmenrah's face. He breaths heavily. I sob even harder now. "Oh, my God," I pull him even closer, if that's possible, I cry out in relief.
"Hey. Hey. I'm okay," he says. "It's only a tiny scratch," he smiles. I bury my face in his neck and cry. After a few moments, I sit up and take a deep breath. I can already tell that my mascara is all over my face. We all stand up and walk over to the group. We all exchange words and hugs.
"Hey, thank you," Larry says. Lancelot tries to fix his nose.
"How do I look?" He asks.
"You look like Lancelot," Larry says. We all make our way back into the museum
As Ahkmenrah carries the tablet up to his parents, I look over at Cam. My eyes go down to her torn jeans. She has blood running down them. "When did this happen?" I ask, pointing to it.
"It doesn't matter. I'm fine," she nods. I make her sit as I address the wound. I pull a bandage and a disinfectant wipe out of my bra. She gives me an odd look and laughs.
"With me, you never know," I shake my head. Once done, I pull her into a hug. "Thank you," I whisper to her. I feel myself start to cry again.
"Don't go all soft on me now," she laughs. I glance at Ahkmenrah with his mother and instantly know what needs to happen.
(Ahk's POV)
Mother and I look over to Kamilah and Cameron on the floor. "Do you really think she's the one?" Mother asks me. I turn to her.
"I do, mother. I really do," I nod.
"What's this?" She brings her hand up and touches my neck. "Makeup?" I smile and shake my head. Mother looks back at Kamilah to see the black tear like marks than run down her cheeks. She smiles softly. I look back at Kamilah. She pulls Cam into a tight hug and laughs. "She would make an excellent mother," Mother notes. I nod in agreement, watching to two.
"Kamilah!" Teddy calls her name. She stands up then grabs her cousins hand, helping her to her feet. I watch as they walk over to the group.
"Kamilah, huh?" Mother grins, eyeing me.
"That is a story for another day. You wouldn't believe what happened to us out there..."
(Kamilah's POV)
"Kamilah!" Teddy calls out. I stand up and give Cam a hand before make our way over there. "I'm sure you can already tell what this is about," He says to me. I nod.
"Yeah, I know. I think it's best," I say with a sad tone.
"Then we are agreed. Lawrence, can I have a word?" Teddy asks.
"Yeah," Larry says.
"The others and I have been talking..." Teddy starts.
"Ahkmenrah's place is here with his family. He must remain here," Octavius says.
"And the tablet should stay here as well, son," Teddy adds.
"This is where it belongs, Gigantor," Jed says.
"Yeah, but that would mean you guys would have to stay here," Larry says. I look over at Ahk with his parents and feel the sting in my eyes again.
"We belong in New York," Sacajawea says. Attila adds his point in Hunnish.
"Yeah, but if you... If you guys go, then you... you won't be alive after tonight," Larry says.
"We're museum exhibits, Laredo. It's what we are," Jed adds. "Folks come to look at us, maybe learn a little something. That's alive, man," Jed finishes.
"But I'm... I'm supposed to take care of you guys," Larry says.
"And you have. You both have. It's okay, Lawrence. We're ready," Teddy says.
"Well... I'm not," Larry says.
"Larry, I've come to know these people as just that: people. Hell, I even love them. It is a sacrifice, I know that. But that's what love is. A sacrifice. Sacrificing yourself, your happiness for the happiness of another. If these amazing people have taught me anything, it's love comes in all forms. I think this is right thing to do," I sigh.
"Let us go, son," Teddy says. Larry looks at Nick and he nods.
"Okay," he softly says. Ahkmenrah walks over and I hang my head, finding it hard to look at him.
"Thank you," He says. The voice that once made my heart skip a beat now gives it a weight of sadness. "For giving me back my family. Larry, Gaur-" he gets choked up. "Guardian of Brooklyn," Ahkmenrah says. I can feel his eyes turn to me.
"Dad," Nick says. I hear Larry clear his throat and everyone step away.
"Kamilah..." He grabs my chin and make me look at him. I feel the tears stream down my face. "Thank you," he softly says. I shake my head. He furrows his brows at me in confusion. Swiftly, I stand on my toes and wrap my arms around him, resting my chin on his shoulder. His hands go around my hips.
"No. Thank you," I whisper. I close my eyes in an attempt to stop the tears, but they just keep coming. "Thank you for teaching me so much more than I thought possible. For loving me in ways I never imagined," I sigh. I got flat-footed again, releasing him from the hug. I place both of my hands on the sides of his face.
"I don't want to say good-bye," he says to me.
"You won't have to. Don't think I won't come visit you as much as possible," I sniffle and laugh. "You can't get rid of me that easy," I lightly sob.
"Shh... Don't cry," he raises his eyebrows. He raises one hand and wipes away my tears.
"How can I not?" I shake my head.
"Because I don't want to see the woman I love be so sad," He softly says.
"I love you so much," I say. I pull him to me and press my lips against his. I hear commotion behind me, but I tone it out. When we pull apart, I hug him again. I open my eyes to see Shepseheret and Merenkahre whispering to each other while they're watching us. I take a deep breath and step back from Ahkmenrah. I walk over to the pair.
"Why can't we be a little selfish?" Shepseheret asks.
"We can be, for a little bit. Only until the time is right," Merenkahre says. They stop when I stand in front of them. I bow to them. "Stand up," he says to me. I follow his orders. I'm caught off guard by the two hugging me. "Thank you for loving our son," Merenkahre says.
"He truly loves you too. We look forward to those visits from you quite soon," Shepseheret sighs. I sniffle one again. Once they release me, I bow my head once more. "We do not bow to family," Shepseheret smiles at me. I feel the urge to cry again, but I manage to hold it in.
"Thank you," I say to them.
"Kamilah. We need to leave if we're going to get everyone back to New York in time!" Larry calls to me. I turn back to Merenkahre and Shepseheret. They both nod to me.
"Until next time, Kamilah," Merenkahre smiles at me.
"Until next time, sir," I smile back. I turn and walk back to Ahkmenrah. "Here," I go to take off the necklace.
"No, you keep it," He says to me.
I kiss him again. "See you soon, Ahkmenrah," I say.
"See you soon, Kamilah," I hear the sadness in his voice but he puts on a smile.
On the plane, I curl up into a ball in my seat. I feel a sudden chill. "My sweater!" I stand up. I remember exactly where I left it. "It's in... Egypt..." I say softly. I smile for a second, Ahkmenrah's worry about me playing over in my head. I decide to sit back down. I curl back into my ball and run my fingers over the necklace hanging around my neck. I look around the plane and I see Cam and Nick holding hands, talking. I look at Larry who's sitting in front of me. "Looks like it worked," I laugh quietly. Larry turns to see what I see.
"That it did," He nods with a smile. I watch as they move closer. Suddenly, they start kissing. I think it's cute for a second, but then it gets a little too awkward. I grab my empty water bottle and throw it at them.
"Distance! Parent and Guardian on board!" I yell out. They laugh as they pull apart.
Back at the museum, we all say our good-byes. I stand with Teddy and Sacajawea. I extend my hand to him. "I think we are way beyond a handshake, Kamilah," Teddy says, pulling me into a big hug. "Family doesn't shake hands with family," He pats my back. I tear up once again.
"Thank you for everything Teddy. I'm going to miss you guys so much. I won't forget to talk to you every night," I say. He sighs with sadness.
"Goodnight, Kamilah," Sacajawea hugs me and I hug her back. "We'll both miss you,"
I then move on to Dexter. "Hey, little guy," I say, grabbing his hand. He climbs up my arm and gives me a hug. He then chitters in a laughing way. "You took my wallet, didn't you?" I laugh. He hands me back my small, black wallet. I kiss him on the top of the head. "I'm going to miss you, you little prankster," I laugh sadly, setting him down.
I walk up to Attila. "It's been a long few years, my friend," he says in Hunnish.
"That it has. That it has," I nod slowly, replying in the same language.
"Now is not the time words though," He says. He grabs me and hugs me tightly. He picks me off the floor and just squeezes me. "I will miss you, Kamilah," he says as he puts me down.
"I'll miss you too, Attila," I smile sadly at him.
I then move on to the last two. "Hey, guys," I walk into the hall of miniatures.
"Saving the best for last, huh Kamilah?" Jed asks.
"You know I can't pick favorites, Jedidiah," I smile at him.
"But if you could, would you say we were your favorite?" Octavius teases.
"You are my favorite Jedidiah and my favorite Octavius. You outrank all of the Jed's and Octavius's of the world," I smile. "I sure am going to miss you guy a lot," I nod.
"Why don't you lean in a little closer?" Jed says. I follow his directions.
"Just a little closer," Octavius says. I inch just bit closer. They both plant a kiss on either of my cheeks.
"You guys," I smile and blush. My watch beeps. "I love you guys so much," I smile.
I find myself walking to Egypt. When I enter the room, as small sniffle escapes me. I walk through the room slowly, trailing my finger against the engraved wall as I move. I stop in front of where Ahk's sarcophagus was. I look around the room. "Many memories in this place, you know?" I say. I laugh slightly, knowing there's no one here to listen. "Right in this very room, 18 years ago, I was laughed at for my fascination of Ancient Egypt," I think about my childhood. "Just a few years ago, outside in that hall, we hugged for the first time. I was so nervous, I couldn't even comprehend my thoughts," I chuckle. "And in that exact same spot, we kissed for the first time and it felt like everything and nothing was happening at the same time. As if the world stopped spinning because we had finally made the connection," I sigh. "And right here, in this very room, you told me you loved me for the first time, even though I didn't know what it was at the time," I reach up and touch my necklace. I kiss my finger softly and press against the stone before turning to walk out. I bow to the Anubis', like always. "You did an amazing job guarding the Pharaoh," I say before walking out. As I leave, I look around at everyone whom I had just said my goodbye's to. They were already quiet again. I step next to Teddy. I pet Texas' nose before placing my hand on Teddy's knee. "Thank you," I whisper to my still friend. I step out of the doors to see Larry watching the building from across the street. I salute him and he salutes back. "How about we get you home, huh?" I wrap my arm around Cam.
"Wanna watch romcoms and cry over a pint of ice cream?" She asks me.
"That sounds great right now," I laugh at her. "How about it? Mint chip and rocky road?" I ask. Cam nods. We walk in the warm sunlight, making our commute home.
