I stand in my kitchen, house to myself. Pulling the lid off the pot, I stir the soup I've been working on all day. I take in a deep smell and smile. There's a knock on the door. I set the spoon and lid down, wiping my hands on the rag in my waistband, I answer the door. Cam walks in. "Hey, Cam," I say, stepping out of her way.
She sniff the air. "Since when did you get good at cooking?" She laughs, pulling off her light coat.
"It's a process. So far, I can do soup... and grilled cheese," I smile.
She laughs. 'So what's this big news you refused to tell me for a while. It's been two months since the accident. Why keep it such a secret?" She sits at the bar in the kitchen.
I make my way back to my soup. "When's this boyfriend of yours coming over? I wanna meet him," I avoid the subject.
"Jeez, woman. Avoid the subject much?" She asks, playing with the Rubik's cube I keep on the bar. "Besides, we broke up," she shrugs.
"Already? That didn't last long," I note, ladling out a bowl of soup for her.
"Yeah... He just not..."
"Not Nick. I know, honey. It's okay to miss him," I nod, setting the bowl in front of her. I grab a spoon and slide it over.
"I just can't believe he took off again. First, he went to Ibiza and I didn't hear from him for a year. He came back and it was great, but now he's studying abroad in Japan?" She scoffs and sets the spoon in the bowl. I fix myself and bowl and sit across from her.
"I told you, if you want to fly out and visit him, you can," I scoop a spoonful of soup out of the bowl and eat it.
"I know. I know... So, how are things going with Ahkmenrah?" She eats her soup.
"That's actually the big news I wanted to talk to you about. Remember the tablet? Well, Merenkahre kept another secret. Let's juts say... We will get to see him more than just at night," I smile. She chokes on the spoon.
"You don't mean?" She asks. I nod. "And you've been sitting on this for two months? Why?" She asks.
"The spell takes two months to work. And well... Those two months are up tomorrow morning," I smile.
She replicates my smile. "This is really happening?" she asks through her smile. I nod wildly, very excited. She screams and stands up. Rushing around the bar, she wraps me in a big hug. "I'm so happy for you!" She yells. I laugh, smiling uncontrollably.
I stand with Ahkmenrah and his parents in the lobby. He's giving hugs and saying good-byes, at least for the day. Once they're done, I walk up to the three. "Thank you, so much," I say. They pull me into a big hug and smile. My watch beeps, alerting us the sun is about to come up. After about a thousand more goodbyes and thank yous, Merenkahre and Shepseheret go back to the Egyptian Exhibit. I look over at Teddy, he's watching us with a warm smile. I give him a salute and he gives me one back before posing. We watch as the sunlight floods the street in front of the building. Ahkmenrah tightly grabs my hand. "Are you ready?" I look at him. He smiles at me and nods. We both walk out of the doors and into the warm sunlight. He looks up at the sky and gasps with a smile. He looks at me, tears running down his face.
"It worked," he sighs and laughs. "It worked!" he yells into the sky. I laugh and tightly hug him. "It worked," he whispers, kissing the top of my head. He pulls off his headpiece and hangs his head back, letting the sunlight bounce off his face. He looks back down at me and hugs me, spinning around. I glance at the road. People walk by, giving us odd looks. "Maybe this looks a little weird," he whispers with a smile, grabbing the cape portion of the robe. "Maybe we should find another style of dress," he suggests.
I laugh and grab his hand. "I know just the place," I smile. I lead him down the street, hand locked with his. We end up going to Manhattan Mall.
"Where is this?" He asks as we walk through the door.
"Manhattan Mall," I smile.
"Manhattan... Do you think we should visit Larry?" He asks as I search for the store I want. I lead him where we need to go. I search the racks for clothes I like. When I few pieces, I ask what Ahk thinks of them. As I search one rack, Ahk speaks up. "How about this?" he asks, holding up a red, women's crop top.
"Well, I'm not sure what you'd wear it with, but..." I joke.
"Not for me," he laughs. He walks up and holds it up in front of me. "I like it," he smiles. He turns me to the mirror on the wall.
"We're here to shop for you, not me," I laugh, pulling a men's shirt off the rack. I examine it before putting it back. He sighs and grabs a random shirt.
"I'll get this one then," he says, not even looking at the shirt. I look at him then the poster behind him.
"Okay, we'll do that," I smile. He just now looks at the shirt.
"As long as we get this for you too," He holds up the red top. I nod and agree.
