Coffee

The three day wait to see the professor again drug by in a dull blur of cleaning, waiting on the bar, and keeping my ears peeled for any of the rumors that Aunt Rosmerta had told me. And finally, Saturday arrived. I was met with a crisp, clear, unusually warm morning. I had the day off and my aunt was busy with the pub, so I was able to slip out unnoticed.

I made my way to the owl post, slipping in and out of the busy streets. When the post came into focus, I could see Snape standing near the entrance, looking around. Smiling, I made my way over to him.

"Hello," I said, making him jump at my sudden appearance. I giggled to myself, he was cute when startled.

"Good morning, Miss (Y/N)." Snape replied, gathering his composure. He seemed like he was being pushed out of his comfort zone. But I suppose meeting a girl would qualify.

"What would you like to do today, professor?" I asked, taking his arm as we began to walk down the road.

"Please, call me Severus." He replied, glancing down at me, "And I thought coffee would be appropriate."

Classic. I thought approvingly. Simple, not complicated. And definitely a safe bet.

Snape led me to a quaint little coffee shop off the main road. The smell of roasting coffee beans hit my nose, making my mouth water. A tiny bell chimed overhead as we entered, and a plump little grandma looking woman greeted us from behind the counter and asked us what we would like.

"Triple shot caramel macchiato with whip, please." I said, giving the woman a sweet smile.

"Large coffee, black." Snape...I mean, Severus, said politely. The woman nodded then turned to make our drinks. We went and sat down on a plush couch in the corner by a fireplace crackling with a merry fire in its hearth.

We talked about my job at the pub and his work at the school until we got our coffee. A comfortable silence fell as we sipped at our drinks.

"I must say," Severus said, setting his coffee down on a small side table, "I was a little surprised when you asked me to meet you at the Hog's Head." Blushing, I looked down at the sugary coffee in my hands.

"I just wanted to know where those rumors came from." I said sheepishly, "I hate unfounded rumors." Severus smiled slightly at my confession.

"Well, thank you for not just assuming I was some dark wizard." He said, taking my hand in his. I looked up at him, surprised.

"Of course," I replied, "I know how rumors can destroy a person's life." Severus eyed me quizzically, trying to decipher my obvious secrecy.

"Is that why you came over from the States?" He asked slowly, as if I was a frightened animal who would spook if he spoke too quickly.

Giving him a morose smile, I said, "Maybe some other time. My secret is not an easy one to explain." Severus nodded understandingly.

The conversation turned back to more cheery things, like the Hogwart's house quiditch match between Ravenclaw and Slytherin this upcoming week. The afternoon passed quickly and before we knew it, it was already four o'clock.

"I should be going soon." I said, standing up, "Aunt Rosmerta will be wondering where I am."

"Let me walk you back to the pub then." Severus said, offering me his arm. I took it, and he tucked me close to him. We walked through the cobblestone streets glowing warmly with the setting afternoon sun. It was a bit chiller now, and I found myself wishing I had worn a thicker cloak. It wasn't a long walk back to the Three Broomsticks, and despite the chill in the air, I wished our walk was longer.

When we reached the back door of my aunt's pub, I turned and smiled up at Severus, "Thank you for such a lovely afternoon. I hope we can do it again soon."

"I would like that." Severus said, my hand still tucked next to him. Neither one of us broke the contact. I looked up into his face and smiled softly. He smiled back, then leaned down and brushed his lips across mine. I leaned into the kiss, enjoying the sensation. When he leaned back, there was a satisfied look on his face.

"I hope to see you again next weekend," He said, releasing my hand.

"Same place?" I replied, and he nodded.

"Next weekend then." He answered and then turned and walked away back towards the school. I leaned against the door, watching him go.

After he was well out of sight, I turned and opened the door. Slipping in, I came face to face with Aunt Rosmerta.

Crap.
