Amanda was intent, focused on her TV screen, the girl keeping the box at a reasonable volume. She looked down, a golden heart locket in her hand, open. Within the piece of jewellery contained a photo of her dog. Sadly, she thought about Tom, her beloved puppy.
On the TV, a news reporter announced that numerous animals were on the loose. Ones from the zoo, ones from animal shelters. Then, a report of a rising virus was announced. An eerie silence was held after.
An outbreak.
An outbreak of what, exactly?
There were many ill, dying in the hospital. So many animals and people were there, it seemed. There were more dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, snakes, turtles, hamsters than there were people.
A deep panic had set within her.
Amanda shoved her heart locket in her pocket, rushing to her car with food, water and blankets. Cold air gnawed on her fingertips and her face. She fumbled with her car keys, finally getting the vehicle started once she'd opened her car's door.
At immense speed, she drove away from her house, just ten miles above the speed limit. She found herself becoming stuck in traffic as she reached an intersection. Everyone else had the same idea.
She studied her phone, noticing that the army was starting to flood in. Her phone lost service moments after.
Amanda looked up, glancing out her window. She eyed a sudden, abrupt movement in the darkness, the moonlight revealing four or more mutated, decaying squirrels chasing after a group of people. The creatures gained up on them, devouring the humans. From the back and front of her vehicle, people honked their horns.
Amanda was struck with panic.
Not knowing what to do, she shrinked below her seat, turning on the radio. Surely those creatures couldn't break into her car!
People are being evacuated, being brought to safety.
It would not last long.
Eventually, the army died off.
Those evacuated died or left with a group, or went on their own terms.
She avoided the army, hot-wired an abandoned car and stole the supplies within it. She was going to find Tom if it was the last thing she'd do, knowing now that there was a chance that he'd be out there... somewhere.
...if one of those horrid creatures didn't find him first.
