It took a lot of courage for Aphrodite to find her boy the next day and tell him he would need to still watch over Liam. She didn't even think she had the courage to say his name. The way Niall broke down as she even asked him what was wrong was heartbreaking.
Niall didn't answer as Aphrodite knocked on his door. Luckily, she knew where Niall hid his spare key. It wasn't that difficult to find. He hid it under a decorative rock on the pathway. Aphrodite believed that a mother should know (if not have) where a spare key. Niall had unwillingly showed her.
As the door swung open, it didn't even look like Niall was in the house. Everything was too pristine and clean for her young boy. "Niall?" She called out. All she heard was a whimper in reply.
Niall was in the bedroom. His pillow had been soaked through with tears. "Oh, Eros." Aphrodite rushed over to him and pushed his hair out of his eyes. "I should have stayed with you last night, I knew I should have. I shouldn't have even let you go see Ares. I'm a horrible mother."
"You're a perfect mother." Niall sniffed. "I'm just a shit person in general. I can't even go back and apologize and beg for Liam to take me back. I can barely say his name!" He shoved his head back into his soaking pillow.
"You aren't a shit person," Aphrodite cooed. "You're perfect. It's got nothing to do with you. A'res has just spent too much time in the mortal world. Humans have rubbed off on him."
"But the worst part is, I don't even think it was his mortal side. It was his godly instincts. All I asked was that maybe he could stay faithful to me when he comes back. And he couldn't promise, Mum!" Niall cried and wrapped his arms around his mother's waist.
"Eros," his mother sighed. There was disappointment in her voice. "You can't just make a god promise that!"
"I just wanted to know that maybe he wanted me for me, not just so he could become immortal and find his place on olympus!" He didn't want to keep crying, he really didn't. Niall felt betrayed by Liam, by his mother. All he wanted was as simple promise. Was it really that hard? "Is it really that hard to stay faithful?"
"When you're an Olympian, it kind of is, sweetie." Aphrodite didn't want to lie with her son. She didn't want to pretend that it wasn't one of the hardest things ever to stay with one person for centuries at a time. "It's hard to stay faithful to one person when there are so many people running by and catching your eye."
"But that is the whole point of love!" Niall burst. "The point is to be able to stay faithful to one person for as long as you live. You should be able to only have eyes for one person, the person you love. Because they are the only one that can make you feel loved and whole. That's the whole point!"
Aphrodite tried to make her son see reason, but she knew he was right. He was the god of love, after all. He knew more about love than she ever would. He knew exactly what it was, because that's all he ever would be.
"I'm sorry, love. I can't tell you why he wasn't able to promise you. But I'm trying to tell you what love is in the eyes of someone that lives forever."
"I'm never falling in love," Niall muttered so his mother could hear it. "Love is a load of bullshit. If no one can do what love was made for in the first place, how do I still exist?"
"Love exists in family, in hope. You will never fade away like most of us will. Love existed in chaos, Eros. It just wasn't you then. Mortals and gods may not be capable of love, but family always will." Aphrodite hugged the boy that still clutched at her waist.
"I just want him to love me like I love him, Mum!" Niall weeped.
"I know, baby," she tried her best to soothe. "I know."

''Liam, you've got to come out!'' Zayn called into the boy's room. It had been a day since he had last seen his friend, and the younger boy's attitude was beginning to get on his nerves. "You can't stay in there forever!"
"Watch me!" Came his muffled reply. Zayn was ready to kick the man's door down. And he would if he didn't worry about the fact that he would more than likely have to pay for the door afterwards.
"Open the damn door, Liam!" Zayn yelled in, banging his fist some more. He heard feet slide off of the bed and a huge thump on the floor. Feet pattered to the door.
"What do you even want?" Liam growled as he opened it. He looked tired. Liam's hair was a mess (his hair was never a mess) and his eyes were red and puffy.
"I want you to come out of your damn room so we can talk like civilized people. And so you can eat something. Otherwise you're going to starve and Niall won't be very happy if either of us let that happen." Zayn said sternly
"Niall doesn't give a damn anymore," Liam grumbled bluntly.
"He cares, whether you know that or not. He cares so much about you," Zayn tried to convince him.
"He's gone, Zayn. He's gone back to Olympus. I won't ever be able to get him back now. It's beyond my control," Liam cried. He had cried and cried and cried over the past twenty-four hours and he was tired of it. He wanted his Niall back.
"When there's a will, there's a way. Get your damn boy back, Payne. I'm tired of your moaning already." Zayn deadbolted. Then he left Liam to think.
