A few minutes later, after homemade tea and fresh scones had been handed around, the jovial mayor greeted the teary-eyed king with a respectful bow of his balding head. All three sat down and sank into the soft furniture. The King and Queen clutched each other's hands and glanced at the floor (clearly not wanting to make eye contact at this heartbreaking time). Queen Caroline nibbled cautiously at her crumbly scone and The King cleared his throat. Before he could speak, he was interrupted.
"Welcome to our town, King Richard!" The mayor's voice boomed, pleased to be around such a high-ranked man. He obviously did not realize why the poor town was being visited by such a high-status couple.
The King cleared his throat: "Well, Mr. Jones- "
"Please, call me Erik!"
"Okay, well, Erik. We would like to swap our son, Edmund.... for... for... someone else's..."
Not daring to disagree with his royal highness, the mayor tactlessly said: "Would you like a son of the same coloring?"
The Queen glanced towards her son, seeing his cleft lip and shivering sadly.
"That would be. Really. Good." Tears poured down her pinched face; this clearly wasn't her decision. She leaned into her husband and he cradled her lovingly - the pain clear in his eyes.
The Queen seemed to lose her elegant beauty as tears streamed down her face. Her green eyes were suddenly watery as the king clutched her to his burly chest.
