I've seen a lot of people online recently calling Lolita a romance and romanticizing the age gap relationship so I wanted to make some things clear. Just to specify these are the reasons Lolita is not a romance, not why "I think she's abused"
1) Humbert Humbert is a pedophile
2) Dolores is a victim
3) Dolores has no where else to go therefore agreeing to the relationship as Humbert is the only adult in her life
4) Dolores is 14 and cannot consent to the sexual relationship
5) Humbert does not love Dolores he loves to control and possess her
6) Even back in the 40's this type of relationship was illegal and still is today
7) Humbert kills Claire Quilty because he was involved with Lo, Humbert killed Claire Quilty our of jealousy and anger not love
8) Humbert Humbert paid Lo to give him sex, she did not consent and fought back so he paid her instead
None of this is romantic it is not love. Don't get me wrong Lolita is still one of my favorite Nymphet books and movies it just is not a romance.
