Chapter Two: Death

*Ashlyn's POV*

I had just gotten home, my purse on my shoulder and sports bag in my hand, when Jeffery, my family's butler, approached me with his arms open wide. I didn't find it odd as he was more of a father figure to my brother and I than my father ever was. I'm not saying that my father was a bad guy, no he's great, but when it came to parental guidance he wasn't the greatest. He was more of the business tycoon type... he and my mother both were.

I dropped my bags to the floor when I realized the tears in Jeffery's eyes. "Hey," I said and walked into his familiar arms. I hoped it wasn't something wrong with his niece. He treated her like his own little girl, just as he treated Alex and me. I felt his arms wrap around me and squeezed me closer. He was shaking from his sobs.

I rubbed his back and I could feel his cheek against the top of my head. His tears dropped into my hair and his sniffling was loud in my ears. "Jeff, please, what's happened? Is it Julie? Do you need a week off?" I asked and pulled away from him so I could see his eyes. They were red rimmed and poofy. My heart was breaking for him.

Jeffery just stood there and shook his head slowly, his shoulders shaking harder. I looked up at my old friend's face. His hair was a pure white color and his aged skin was wrinkled and saggy. The corners of his eyes were pulled down but his blue eyes were still twinkling with life. However, they were now glassed over with tears.

I had never seen him in this kind of state. My worry rate blasted through my mental roof.

I put my hands on his shoulders, shaking him gently. "Jeffery! Jeffery! Please! What's happened?!" I'm yelling but I didn't care. Something had happened and I had to know.

My mind was flashing with possibilities. Julie. Was she okay? She was a little younger than me and I was only eighteen. Did she die? Was she hurt? I bit my bottom lip to stop it from trembling. She was a real close family friend.

Jeffery shook his head. "News," he choked out and I knew he wasn't going to say anything more. I took his hand and led him away from the front hallway, pulling him into the living room and onto one of the leather recliners. I frowned. His breathing looked a bit off.

"Hold on, I'll get you some water," I said and walked away, grabbing the remote off the large coffee table in front of the matching couch. I hit the power button, aiming it at the flat-screen tv on the opposite wall.

I walked into the kitchen and leaned on the giant marble center piece between the dining room and kitchen. "Linda! Are you here?" I called out and a round face popped out from the open storage room. She walked out and smiled at me, wiping her hands on her apron around her waist.

"Miss Ashlyn, you look gorgeous as always. How may I help you?" She stood across from me and leaned forward on the counter top.

"Could you make Jeffery some hot chocolate? Also maybe some cookies please. He's a bit off right now," I said. Actually he was a lot off but I didn't correct myself.

Linda watched me as if waiting for some kind of reaction. I looked at her confused and she shook her head, clearing whatever thoughts she was having. She smiled at me, "Of course Miss Ashlyn. I'll bring them into the living room when they're ready," she said before turning away from me.

"Thanks Linda," I said and grabbed a couple bottles of water before making my way back into the living room.

When I get back in the living room, Jeffery is still sitting in the recliner, his feet propped up. He looked more composed and a bit of my worrying wore off. He was already feeling better.

I sat on the couch and handed him his water. He gave me a small smile before accepting the water bottle. I grabbed the remote and settled into the couch ready to discover whatever was on tv that Jeffery was emotional about.

"One Direction left with no management. What will happen next?" I switched the channel. Obviously One Direction's "tragedy" wasn't the cause of Jeffery's emotional state.

"The death of millionaires Mrs. and Mr. Adams of Adams Incorporated-," I turned the tv off, cutting the woman, with too much plastic surgery, off.

I felt my stomach drop. Death. My parents were dead. I could feel my hands start shaking. My water bottle hit the floor.

"My parents...are dead?" I whispered in shock. I couldn't believe it.

"And Alexander," Jeffery said quietly. So quiet, to a point where I thought I had misheard him. I hoped I had misheard him.

But I didn't. My twin brother was dead. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't see. My eyes blurred and burned.

And then I blacked out.
