Chapter 5~ DjoodjooThe boy stayed in the small community for a long while, immigrating with the animals so the group can hunt.
He grasped the language quickly and was taught many things when staying with the group.
He learnt that their people were called the Rigolet and had learnt how to hunt. He was taught by the chief to respect the animals, even the ones that they ate, and to never waste the food from animals and thank the animals for giving their life to feed them. The chief's partner taught the boy how to use the animal's fur to make clothing.
After a while, everyone started calling him Tokota (He who is friends with everyone). The name began to stick, and he called his pet polar bear, Nikan (My friend). The people tried to eat Nikan the first time the polar bear show himself, but Tokota was there to save him every time. Tokota taught the polar bear how to hunt, and the bear had saved the village from starving once by bringing back a seal bigger than himself.
Tokota was happy he found a place to call home, a.... Kanata(village). He loved the lands and would go wander outside of the kanata sometimes. One wintery day, Tokota and Nikan found themselves at a frozen pond that would probably be good for ice fishing. The bear went off to wander some more while Tokota stays to rest on a log near the lake.
It was pretty cold today, maybe more than the day he was found. He found himself deep in thought remembering about general winter. General Winter was a cold man, and he had a creepy aura about him, but General Winter had saved him from dying out there so he couldn't be that bad.
The winds started to get colder around him, making him tremble a bit, despite the warm clothes he had on. Soon he realized he wasn't trembling because of the cold, it's because there is another presence here.
Tokota's lips started to turn purple as he turned into a ball for warmth, frost creeping up his legs keeping him from going back to the kanata.
Suddenly he felt a familiar large hand push him towards the lake. He saw a glimpse of the culprit, the man who saved him from the cold, General Winter, with a mischievous grin on his face. This image will always haunt Tokota.
Tokota's body fell onto the ice and slid a little, not too far but still far enough to make Tokota panic. Tokota saw General Winter's body fade away as he looked up. He tried standing up but heard a crack under the ice under him. And then, he fell through the freezing ice, landing into the cold water. He tried out, but his body was too paralyzed to move.
Suddenly he felt a pull from the back of his coat. A woman that he didn't know was pulling Tokota up back to the surface. Once he was pulled to land, he felt the warm arms of the lady carrying him. Her presence felt familiar, like a mother's arms.
He felt the lady running. Opening his eyes, he sees the lady. She had beautiful violet eyes and a determined look on her face. She was very tan and had a cowlick in her hair. In the corner of his eyes, he saw Nikan running with them with a worried look on his face.
Tokota decided to close his eyes again until he heard the lady speak "Don't close your eyes right now child, keep them open for me". Though her voice sounded panicked, her voice sounded confident but kind.
"Can I trust this lady?" Tokota thought, tensing up in her arms. He didn't feel like trusting people after the man that he trusted tried to kill him. He didn't like where his thoughts were going, so he looked at the scenery around him.
Tokota recognized the area they were in, which meant that they were close to Kanata(home). They passed a secret area that Tokota noticed. It was a small beach that lead to an ocean. He had to visit that area later he thought.
By the time they reached Kanata, Tokota was shivering to his knees. The chief greeted the lady like she was the most important person in the world, like a goddess. The chief thanked her for bringing Tokota back home and offered her a place to stay as Tokota warmed up, but the lady insisted to help nurse Tokota back to health.
After Tokota woke up, he saw Nikan beside him, sleeping. He noticed the lady and he can see her better now. She had long braided hair with a cowlick and two feathers and her figure was fit. She truly did look like a goddess with her confident eyes but kind smile. The lady noticed that Tokota had woken up and went to hug him.
"Hello, little nation, what is your name" she spoke in a gentle voice, facing to see Tokota. Tokota hesitated a little until he squeaked a little "Tokota...". The woman giggled and said "Hello, Tokota, my name is Nani(strong), I am your Djoodjoo(mother)"
