It had been a long time, several years, since Blinky and Aargh had bonded. With the increased security and happiness between the two, Aargh's nightmares had stopped completely, and he often cuddled with Blinky long after the two had woken up.

It was one such gentle morning when Vendel knocked on their door, his face sagging with despair. Blinky had opened the door with a grin, but seeing his mentor and close friend so distraught made him pause. "What's going on?"

Blinky stood in the doorway, suddenly feeling small. Vendel shook his head and stepped forward to hug Blinky, a slight tremor passing through his rocky skin. "Oh my dear Blinkous, I am so sorry. I should come in and talk to you and Aargh both."

The older troll settled himself at their main table, where Blinky nervously brought out hot drinks to share, since he and Aargh hadn't eaten yet that morning.

"There is no easy way to say this. The whole way to your home my heart felt heavier and heavier. Many years ago I made a promise to your mother, when she was dying after your difficult birth. I told her that I would protect you and your brother for my entire life, and I have... failed."

Vendel shook his head, a single tear trailing from each eye. "Dictatious is dead."

Blinky felt as though his heart had been ripped out of his chest. His body was numb, and his brain felt as though someone had stirred it with a spoon. His strong, smart, capable brother couldn't be dead- he couldn't be. It just wasn't possible.

A strangled sob escaped Blinky, and Aargh's strong arms folded themselves around him, pulling the smaller blue troll against his chest as he broke down. Vendel sat close by with his head down, unable to bear the heart-wrenching sounds filling the room.

Blinky couldn't breath, couldn't see, as waves of pain rolled through his chest without mercy. He hadn't been speaking to Dictatious for some time now, but he had always viewed it as temporary; never had he considered living the rest of his life without his brother.

And the last thing they had done was fight.
