"There were goblins alright, but... there were humans with them." Blinky's brow furrowed. "Are you sure? They couldn't be some new kind of changelings?" Jim shook his head. "Definitely humans. They had maps and things, maps of- of here, Blinky." The blue troll gasped, horrified. This shouldn't even be possible. Suddenly, the room began to shake.
Polonius and Deia started running towards the room, but Jim yelled, "Stop! The roof could fall at any moment!" The babies froze, and wailed helplessly. "It'll be alright! Just stay where you are!" Blinky shouted, watching a crack spread across the ceiling. "I promise, it'll all be alright!" As Polonius and Deia hugged each other for comfort, the roof crumbled down on top of their dad and the trollhunter.
"Daddy! Daddy!" As soon as Aargh had heard the crash he had come running, but it was too late. He scooped his crying children into his arms, cradling them, glad that they were safe at least. Claire and Toby ran in moments later, and Claire took a hand of each of the shocked babies. "Aargh, you're big and strong enough to start searching the rubble. Let me take the kids somewhere else until you find Blinky and Jim." Her face was pinched with fear, but determination flared in her eyes as well. "I want to stay and help." Toby stated, and started pulling chunks of rock from the pile.
It seemed to take hours, but enough rock was finally cleared to where a couple of crushed tables and dusty books could be found. Toby saw Jim's hand poking out of the rubble and grabbed it, relieved when he felt an answering squeeze. "Jim! Can you hear me?" Another squeeze. Aargh moved the largest of the rocks, and they found Jim curled in a pocket of space between two huge boulders. He coughed, but seemed overall unharmed.
"I tried to shove Blinky out of the way, I tried- he got pulled away from me. Aargh I'm so sorry, I tried..." Aargh nuzzled him briefly to comfort the young trollhunter. "Which way did he fall?" asked Toby, already sifting more rubble. "He was to my left, right beside the first bookshelf."
Rock after rock was moved, and Aargh's stomach twisted when there were no signs of his mate. But then- a flash of blue! He and Toby dug and dug, gradually revealing Blinky's unconscious body.
Aargh was finally starting to believe that this would all turn out alright- then he saw the huge amounts of blood.
