"You really are such a great friend, Lei."
Lei sighed as he looked out the window. Friend. How could Jing not know that after all these years, he didn't want to just be a friend anymore? He thought that all the time and attention he was giving her made that clear, but she just didn't seem to get it. Now she was gone, and who knew when she was coming back?
He sat at his desk and put on Beethoven's Concerto in D Major. Something about classical music soothed him. He looked at the stack of women's magazines on his desk, and took out a notebook from his backpack and opened it. When Jing came back, he was going to be ready. He took a look at his notes.
Know what women want. Reading the magazines was teaching him that women seemed to think differently from men. There was a lot of mind games involved when it came to women, and it was going to take a lot of practice to understand just how they thought. Thank goodness for these magazines.
Set yourself apart. Women noticed men who were different, or so the magazines said. He had ideas for this, starting with taking up Music as his college major. Everyone else, including his friends, were taking up business courses, but he might as well spend the next four years doing something that he not only loved, but also set him apart. Slowly but surely, he was also filling his wardrobe with soft neutrals and pastels that made him look elegant and sophisticated—the kind of man he felt Jing should be seen with.
Be very clear about your intentions, both to her and to the rest of the world. This had taken a bit of inspiration, but he lucked out when he met a guy who was willing to program the lights of a building for him. It was literal, borderline cheesy, but a flashing heart on a building would be a very clear sign to her and to the world that he loved her and she was his, and—
"What's this??" Meizou snatched the notebook away.
Lei whipped around and saw Meizou, Ximen, and Daoming Si standing behind him. How could he not hear them enter his room?? Ximen was looking at the women's magazines on his desk, and Lei felt his face redden.
Meizou flipped through the pages of the notebook. "Be her shoulder to cry on," he read slowly, "You'll show you can be counted on when she's most vulnerable, and she'll see you as reliable and understanding—everything she wants in a guy." Lei braced himself for all the teasing he was sure to get, and was shocked when Meizou began to clap. Ximen took a look at a few pages and began to clap too.
"Lei, you are officially our love guru," Ximen declared. "Please, teach us your ways!" Meizou said, bowing down to him. Lei looked at them both, "Are you guys crazy? I don't even know if any of those things will work!" Meizou and Ximen looked at each other then looked back at him. "We'll try them for you!!" they said in unison. Lei looked at them carefully. Letting them try these ideas would allow him to assess if they actually worked, without him ever being disloyal to Jing. This could work.
He nodded and Meizou and Ximen high-fived each other. "Hey," Daoming Si said, looking annoyed. "Are we playing poker or what?" The three of them looked at him and sighed. Clearly, women and love weren't on Daoming Si's mind just yet. Who knew what he would be like when he fell in love? All Lei knew was, when Jing came back, a brand new Lei would be waiting for her. And he was going to be more than just her friend.
