Okay, before we get to the good stuff, let me just say that when I read the Twilight Saga, I actually liked it. I actually liked Bella, and my young impressionable pre-teen self looked forward to how she would react to becoming a vampire. But when she turned into a vampire, I was disappointed. I didn't know why, but I just liked her better human. It could be a myriad of reasons, but I think it's because when she was human, she at least struggled, even if it was only with her clumsiness. And then with the whole pregnancy thing her struggles became life-threatening. I suppose I thought that once she turned into a vampire, she'd struggle with her bloodlust, but she didn't. She showed amazing self-control and was able to visit her dad with no trouble just days after the transformation. Looking back, that was solid proof that Bella was a Mary Sue.
So, now, on to the book.
So the book opens with it being revealed to us that Bella is in a coma and dying, and may only have a few days left. All the stress she's been put through has taken its toll on her body. Carlisle, however, offers a bit of hope, and tells Edward and Jacob that if Bella were turned into a vampire, she may survive. Jacob doesn't want Bella to become a vampire, doesn't want her to become a bloodsucking corpse, but Edward values Bella's survival over her purity. The first third of the book will deal with this argument about whether to turn Bella into a vampire. As Bella's condition worsens, Jacob consents to Bella being turned into a vampire. Edward bites her and three days later she awakens from her coma, with Edward waiting over her to feed her blood.
Bella doesn't mind her new vampirism, partly because she's been wanting it throughout the series and partly because, for the first time in months, she doesn't feel sick. She's released from the hospital with Carlisle's permission, and she promptly moves in with Edward. Bella cuts herself off from the human world, scared she may kill someone. She keeps in touch with her father but doesn't see him in person for months. Meanwhile, Edward trains her in how to be a vampire.
Over in Italy, Victoria's death has been reported and, seeing as vigilante justice hasn't worked out, the Volturi decide to go after Edward and Bella with more official authorities. Fortunately for Edward, there are vampires on his side who want the Volturi overthrown.
Yep. This book just turned into a YA rebellion story.
Anyway, the Volturi and the Cullens gather together their sides over the course of several weeks and finally meet on the battlefield just outside Forks and have an epic fight (because I will admit that the ending to the Twilight Saga was seriously anticlimactic). At some point, Bella kills the leader of the Volturi and brandishes his head for all the Volturi supporters to see. She then declares the Cullens the new leaders of the vampire world.
