Chapter Seventeen: Oh Mother
Reina’s Apartment: Warwick, Rhode Island
“I miss the taste of the sweeter life…”
Oh, Adam Levine. I walked over to the radio in my kitchen that morning and turned up the volume for this song in particular as I brewed my coffee.
“I miss the conversations… I’m searching for a song tonight… I’m changing all of the stations.”
But then I realized I still needed to call my mother.
Sorry Adam.
“Hello?”
“Hello mother.”
“Oh Reina! It’s you! That good for nothing Edward changed all of my contacts around again.”
“Oh, I’m sorry mother. Why don’t you put a password on your phone?”
“Because I would have to tell Edward to remember it.”
We both burst out laughing, Adam Levine still singing in the background.
“So I had a question for you mother…” I asked, a bit weary.
“Shoot.” She said.
“Do you think we could go shopping maybe? One of these days after work? I need a dress for a dinner I have to attend and don’t think I would do well on my own.”
“That’s great honey but didn’t you say you were going with your friend… what was her name there… Jiya?”
Shit.
“You mean Jaya?”
“Yeah her! What happened? Are you not going to go with her?”
I thought about any possible excuses I could make without my mother questioning my social skills.
“No you’re right. I totally forgot. Look at me. Thank you mother.”
“Oh no problem honey. Maybe next time, when you have a date or something.”
Like that would ever happen.
“Sure thing mom.”
“But I wonder where were you? When I was at my worst down on my knees, and you said you had my back—“
Radio off.
“Love you Reina. Have fun and do send me a picture of the dresses when you buy them!”
“Yeah mother, I definitely will.”
End conversation.
I wasn’t going to give up so easily. If there was any other person I trusted with my personal issues then it would have to be Trisha.
“Hey baby doll? What’s up?”
“I need a favor.”
“Oh! Okay… I’m kind of on call today so I don’t know when—”
“No it’s not that, it’s just I need you to go dress shopping with me.”
“Oh. Reina, that’s totally doable for me. When though?”
“You tell me. I am determined to make time. I really need to catch up with you and its killing me.”
“I’ll let you know for sure baby doll. Is everything okay though?”
“Yeah… why?”
“Have you been eating?”
“I have Trisha.”
