Chapter Nineteen: Radiated
Rhode Island Hospital: Providence, Rhode Island

“I. Refuse. To. Do. It.” Katrina stated for the billionth time that day.

“It is your turn to do it therefore you shall do it.” Brad emphasized yet again.

How freaking insensitive could anyone be to the needs of a female?

“Brad. I am pregnant. I refuse to put my baby in danger and there is no way you can force me to perform a procedure that puts a life at risk.”  Kat said.

“That doesn’t mean I’ll do it!” Brad said.

“It is between the two of you.” Armando said, standing next to Jaya as they continued to watch Kat and Brad argue over who would perform a fluoroscopy.

I really wish I were doing something else right now rather than watch them argue over stuff like this.

“I don’t care. I will not do it because it is not my turn.” Brad said.

“Well you’re going to have to do it because like the gentleman you claim yourself to be, you should do it for the sake of my unborn child.” Kat huffed, the frustration visible in her eyes.

“What’s going on here?” Someone whispered beside me.

I jumped when I saw Neal standing next to me, holding a clipboard and asking me the question along with that usual quizzical look in his eyes.

“It’s technically Kat’s turn to perform a fluoroscopy but she’s pregnant so she can’t do it and Brad refuses to cover for her. Everyone else has passed their limitations on radiation for the day.” I whispered back.

“How long have they been going at this?”

“Almost half an hour.”

“You should stop them.”

“Oh really? I never thought about that.” I said, rolling my eyes at him.  “Why don’t you do it?”

He leaned in to tell me something as Brad and Katrina continued.

“Well it’s not exactly my problem.” Neal whispered into my ear.

Even though he had only leaned in to make sure they didn’t hear what he said, it had that kind of effect on me. You know; the kind where a guy is like “Take off your shirt” and you don’t even think about it and the next thing you know your shirt is on the floor?

Shit did I just think that?

“It’s not mine either!” I finally managed to say after getting my mind out of the gutter.

“I won’t do it Simmons. God this seriously wasn’t meant to be a field for people like you—” Brad said, much more aggravated than before.

“Like what? Women?” Kat tested.

I needed to stop this now.

“Brad.” I said.

“What? It’s only the truth. If she wouldn’t have decided to get pregnant right now none of this would’ve happened and—”

“Need I remind you that a woman gave birth to you Brad?” I said with a certain edge to my voice that I hadn’t heard before.

It almost scared me.

“Guys, I think that’s enough.” I heard Neal say.

“But—“ Brad tried

“Brad, enough.” Neal said, firm toned. “You will perform the fluoroscopy. Kat, why don’t you go sit down and analyze his reports that he cares so much about? That way work is being accomplished at all costs.”
