It was 3 days before my wedding, and my family and friend were at my apartment helping me get things together. I hadn’t seen my parents in ages and it was so great to see them. Riley and my dad got along famously in the living room while me, Jess, Bridget, and mom were in the kitchen cooking.
“Have you seen The Tonight Show, Momma Montague?” Jess brought up Jimmy for the 500th time.
“Oh yes, Jimmy’s such a charm. Have you seen it Zoey love?”
“Whenever I can catch it, Ma.” I continued cutting onions.
“Oh, well I think he’s such a great host Jessica. I’ve always liked him.”
“Okay, mom please.” I sternly said. Bridget walked over to me and sighed.
“I don’t know why she keeps doing this.” She whispered.
“I don’t know either but it’s fucking pissing me off.”
“What’s pissing you off, honey?” Jessica smirked.
“Nothing, cut the damn potatoes.” I rolled my eyes.
“Mama Montague.” Jess said.
“Yes honey?”
“Mom, help Jess cut the potatoes.” I sighed, trying to stop Jess from talking.
“You know, I always liked Jimmy too. He was so good to Zo.”
Mom nodded and smiled. It was over from there. I just kept cutting, trying not to look up.
“You know, I always thought Jimmy would be the one to marry my babygirl. They were so great for each other it’s a shame, Jessica. But you know, Riley’s a great guy. I’m just glad my baby’s gotten some help and she’s better.”
“Thanks mom. Continue cutting, for god’s sake.” I said. Tears were forming from my eye. Burning tears from the onions and real tears.
“I miss Jimmy, I should ask Zoey to take me to see him.” She kept talking to Jessica.
“Shit!” I cut my finger. The room got quiet and I ran to the bathroom. I shut the door and sat on the edge of the bathtub crying.
“Baby?” Riley knocked.
“What..” I answered.
“You okay?”
“Go get Bridget, and Jessica.”
Bridget and Jess came in moments after Riley departed. Jess locked the door and leaned against it.
“What’s up, buttercup? You need something?” Bridget sat next to me.
“What am I even doing.”
“What do you mean?” Bridget asked.
“Marrying him.”
“Oh honey, it’s just nerves. I had the same nerves when I married Anthony.”
“No. It’s not nerves, Bridget. I talked to Jimmy last week.”
“And what happened?” Jess spoke out of nowhere.
“Him and his wife are going through it, and I comforted him. But we were in my old dressing room back at SNL, and I felt like I needed to be with him. I felt something I don’t feel with Riley.”
“He was your first love, of course. But Riley is your future husband. Jimmy and you were so young.” Bridget said.
“Oh Bridget shut the fuck up and stop trying to sugarcoat every fucking thing. Riley isn’t the man she’s supposed to marry.”
