Sleeve rolled up, blood on the knife. Normal things for Nana Ashida to see. She didn't feel anything from cutting herself, she was used to it. Pain made her feel better.
"Nana?" A voice came from the other side of her door, her boyfriend.
"Hang on, Zane! I'll be there in a minute!" She called, wrapping up her wound and covering it with her hoodie sleeve. She accidentally left her knife sitting on her blanket, still soaked in blood.
"Hurry up, I don't have all day, y'know," He sighed.
She took a deep breath, put on a fake smile and flung the door open, "Hi!"
"Hey. You okay?" He asked, being very forward.
"Of course I am! Why wouldn't I be?" She giggled. She wasn't okay. She was not okay at all. What was okay?
"It's just that you've been acting off recently," He said, "It's worrying me"
Nana gasped, "P-please don't worry about me! I-I'm fine! I swear!"
Zane, being slightly taller than his girlfriend was able to peek over her. He saw the knife, "Nana, why is there a knife on your bed?" He asked.
"Oh! It's nothing, don't worry!" She smiled, biting her lip.
Zane sighed and pushed past her, walking over to her bed to pick up the knife. He saw the blood on it and looked over at Nana, "Why is there blood on it?"
"I..."
"Nana, why is there blood on it?!" He yelled.
Nana stayed quiet, looking down. She really didn't want to tell him.
"Nana, please..." He walked over to her, putting the knife on her bedside table. He put his hand on her her cheek, "Talk to me..."
"It's not easy to..." She mumbled.
"I know... Just... Why is there blood on the knife?" He asked again.
Nana's eyes started to fill with tears as she hugged him, "I love you..."
He hugged back, "I love you too, Nana..."
"I-I'm sorry..." She sobbed.
"About what?"
"Not te-telling you earlier... You had enough to worry about... I didn't want me to be one of those things you worry about..." She took a deep breath, "I cut myself... Everyday... That's why I wear long sleeves now... I don't want anyone to find out... I'm sorry! I'm not that perfect girlfriend you want me to be! I'm not enough, am I?!"
"Nana! Stop it! You are enough! You're perfect. But... How long?"
"Huh?"
He pulled away from the hug and put his hands on her shoulders, "How long have you been cutting yourself?"
"A year..." She replied, wiping a year.
"Why?"
"I'm flawed... I live in my sibling's shadow... I'm the middle child... No one cares about the middle child if your family is as big as mine... I just want to be special for once in my life... That's why I created Kawaii~Chan... It's a persona to hide my pain... The pain of being plain..." She told him.
"You are special, Nana. You're special to me. All our friends think you are... All the relationships you've been in should prove that, right?" He asked.
Nana nodded, "Yeah... I guess..."
"Promise me this, Nana. If I can prove how special you are... You won't do this again," He suggested.
She nodded, "I promise..."
"Good," Zane had a little smile under his mask.
Nana looked at him, "Can you kiss me before you go?" She asked.
He nodded, removing his mask and kissing her.
She kissed back, finally feeling happy.
Zane pulled away, "See ya, Nana. Remember, don't do it"
"I won't," She smiled.
He smiled back as he closed the door behind him.
Nana turned around to sit on her bed, she pulled up her sleeve to look at all her scars carved into her arm, and sighed.
Was she really going to be able to keep this promise to him?
