After the long wait and endless noise from the teachers on the importance and urgency of the final exams, it was time to come face to face with it. It didn't really feel like we had reached the climax of high school. It didn't feel like the exams had begun. Ordinarily there supposed to be a drop of fear, tension, anxiety, curiosity in fact so many feelings but non of that was seen. The entire senior students acted so calm like nothing significant was happening, the nonchalant attitude got the whole school worried and frustrated because all their efforts to make us focus most times landed on deaf ears and unreceptive hearts.
The examination period gave us more freedom than just being seniors, we got to do a lot of things without supervision, how awesome. We skipped school, we go out for some fun when there's nothing interesting happening in school, we interacted more freely with teachers and most importantly went home whenever we wanted. We were just unstoppable.
After some practicals the real stuff began, the hot seats were neatly arranged and numbered. One by one we entered the hall, took our seats and awaited the arrival of our new best friend, the exam question papers. It was at that point we really knew those of us who were preparing for the exams despite the unlimited freedom and those who took every bit of it as a joke. Soon after we had been given the papers, the noisy hall gave way to silence and became as a graveyard, it was so calm and peaceful, I believe if someone was to drop a pin it would have been heard even by those who sat in the last row.
The exams went very smoothly until the timetable got altered, CRS and physics were to be written in the second and fourth weeks respectively. The alterations moved CRS two days backwards before the original date and physics moved to the third week from fourth. With the school having told us to remain at home on days we didn't have paper, we had no idea about the changes until the day of the exam. We came to school that day and found a new timetable, oh! The horror, most people weren't in school and the exam was just minutes away. We rushed to the hall and there made several efforts to reach those who weren't in school, some responded immediately, some got in over 40 minutes into the exam but one of us missed it completely, it was terrible. The same was the case with physics, although nobody missed the paper it was tough getting those who weren't in school to come. Kemi was one of them, she got to the hall 20 minutes into the exams. She was threatened with not being given the exam papers because of her lateness but she paid them no attention and took her seat hoping and praying that the supervisor would have a change of mind. After waiting for almost 15 minutes the papers finally came and the work began. The examination period did not only bring out our studious part, it equally made us act in crazy ways. Sandra called it "extravagant madness". At the end of a paper or days we had no exams, instead of going hone or staying back home and get refreshingly prepared for the next paper, we would rather be in school playing and doing so many other things that had nothing to do with the
exams. Different groups came up, people who had previously only been class or set mates suddenly became gist buddies. The classes were emptied of desks and used as play grounds or stages for several kinds of display. Some thought the class was too small and decided to take the "madness" to the school field where there's unlimited space. Those of us who weren't interested in playing found cozy spots or sat outside the hall and have endless discussion and arguments from different topics, most times unrelated.
Hunger is one thing every person writing an exam for more than 3 hours is bound to feel. After 3 long hours of non stop tasking of the brain, the only thought that was in our head was food, food and food. The school's cafeteria was always congested with everyone trying to squeeze in through the smallest of space. Those who couldn't hold their hunger decided to take a stroll to an eatery not too far from the school, Kemi was one of them. On getting there before ordering anything they gulped down one pack of juice, they then ordered shawarma but Kemi had no idea that her purse had been stolen during the rush to leave the hall, she dipped her hand inside her bag but couldn't feel it, she looked into the bag yet could not find the purse. She was speechless for a while and trying so hard to hide the surprise on her face from Clara and Jennifer who happened to have followed her because if either of them found out especially Clara, she would have definitely gotten insulted and tagged careless. Thankfully she transfered the money from her account and that was how she escaped that day.We had some of the best moments of our lives writing those exams both as individuals and as a set. It made us understand the value of team work and unity because before any of the papers commenced, we would go through several topics together and try as much as we could to break them down to their simplest forms. It also made us realize that it wasn't as difficult as they said it would be, probably because we prepared but to be honest some of the termly exams we took were a lot more difficult. We could now breath the fresh air of a wider world, hope more broadly and get our minds prepared for our graduation, what did you expect, that I'll skip grad and speak of getting into the University? O no! Grad first then whatever comes after will be a story for another day.
