The streets were littered with trash, makeshift homes, and people.
Massive towers filled with apartment complexes stretched high into the sky; causing even the birds to be afraid of perching on the rooftops. Gray fog clung tightly to the air, choking out any view of the sky.
Those lucky enough to afford shelter lived with at least five other people, all sharing one room.
I was one of the lucky ones. I only had to share my bed with two other people, while most had to share their bed with four or five others.
My parents would tell me stories of when our town was an open, green place. They would tell me of times when grass lined the sidewalks and trees climbed the skies, instead of apartments.
Sometimes, when I was bored, I would draw pictures of what I thought all of this would have looked like. I drew vast gardens with flowers blanketed across the ground, instead of the plastic and wrappers that I am used to.
I perched myself on the curb of the streets the snakes through my town. I took out my old notepad and began to sketch. I added every color to my drawings. Green grass, small purple flowers, sleek white benches, soft pink petals scattered across the ground; stuck to the sidewalk due to the rain.
"Hm. Not as good as your last one, but I like it," a voice said from behind me, pulling me away from my art.
I smiled softly, "Hey Seungmin," I greeted the boy adorned in dark gray clothing, torn from overuse. His tousled red hair offset his dulling eyes, slowly draining color from lack of hope. "How are you doing?" I asked honestly, hoping he at least had a meal today.
Seungmin was not as fortunate as me. His family could not afford housing, and barely scraped enough money together for food. Seungmin was one of my oldest and closest friends, which is why I constantly offered him food and blankets. He typically declined, unless he was really struggling.
He sighed. I could see the stress taking a toll on him. His youthful skin was fading into a dull gray, and his eyes seemed misted with doubt. Ribs stuck out from his chest, his cheeks beginning to look sunken in, like he had not eaten a decent meal for months. I wanted to throw my arms around him and somehow make it all better, but I knew I could not.
When I was little, I begged my mom to let Seungmin and his family live with us. My mom had to constantly remind me that housing non family members in the apartment was illegal and we would lose not only our house, but our source of income as well.
He smiled fakely, his happiness not reaching his tired eyes.
"I'm ok, just a little hungry is all. You are looking thin as well, how has your family been doing?" He asked me, sitting himself down beside me on the curb.
I chuckled softly; he always expressed such concern for me. I was never the one who had to endure real hunger or the thought of having to live on the streets.
"I'm fine Minnie, I just gave up today's food plate so I could buy new pencils," I told him honestly. I would often use my money to buy art supplies instead of the rations that my parents always bought. My eyes suddenly lit up in excitement.
"I got you something!" I said happily as I reached for my pocket, pulling out a small notebook.
"I know you like music, so I got you this book to help you start writing. Here are some pencils too, to get you started," I said, handing him the thin pages and a pack of small mechanical pencils. His large hands grasped the notebook, taking it from my smaller ones. He looked up at me in gratitude.
"Thank you... how did you afford this?" He asked cautiously, hoping I did not starve myself to give him the notebook.
I smiled, "don't worry, I have been saving for a while. Consider it an early birthday present," I said, giggling lightly, placing my hand down beside his on the cement curb.
His eyes locked with mine. "Thank you-" he started, before getting interrupted by the sound of a government announcement over the speakers that littered the town.
"Attention residents of District 9. You are being permenantly relocated to Earth Planet B in order to maintain this overpopulation issue. Do not worry, all of your belongings will be transported to your new assigned housing. Congratulations. Your president, JinYoung Park." The message blared through the speakers, echoing off of every building. A cheer rose from the crowds of people listening to the announcement on the road.
"Does this mean... we will all have a place to live?" Seungmin asked me, hope finally peaking through his dulled eyes. I smiled and shrugged.
"I sure hope so Seungmin," I said genuinely.
But all I could really think about was the nature. Would there be trees? Plants? Flowers? Could I finally have a real garden?
The buses pulled up, swallowing masses of people, finally transporting them to a better life.
Seungmin and I sat next to each other, chatting and fantasizing about what our new rooms would look like.
Seungmin said that he would have the cleanest, nicest looking house out of everyone. I said that my room would be filled with my drawings, hung up all over the walls. Of course, not covering the massive window that showcased my garden. He smiled and promised to visit my house as often as possible, as long as I returned the favor.
"We are here," the drivers voice boomed overhead, opening the doors to reveal a giant metal facility. Seungmin grabbed my hand quickly.
"Are you sure this is right?" He asked me, concerned lacing his voice. This building was not matching up with our perception of a launching site.
I simply shrugged. "Maybe we get our stuff here, and then another bus will take us to the rocket."
He smiled, looking relieved.
"That makes sense," he said, nodding, before guiding me off of the bus.
We shuffled inside, metal trapping us in, an uneasy feeling slowly settling on the crowd of people. The lights cut out, leaving us trapped in here, surrounded by nothing but the body heat, and heavy breathing of a thousand strangers.
"Welcome to your new home ladies and gentlemen. Let the elimination process begin." A voice rang out ominously, bouncing off the locked metal doors and impenetrable walls.
The last thing we heard was the blood-curtling screams of a hundred strangers. We were being sentenced to death, in order to sustain life.
