The day that the unpleasant encounter happened started just like any other day. The girls had classes, played games, talked and laughed. But it all started when they went swimming. Sophia Johnson wasn't a very good swimmer. But she could manage to float.
But she still joined the others to have a swim. Gwendoline always seem to tease her that she was very quiet and that she was lazy because she doesn't do sport. This was weird because Gwen doesn't do sports either.
That day, Shasha was having fun swimming with the others. Sophia was trying hard to float at the surface at the other end of the pool. When suddenly Gwendoline pounced on her and Sophia was struggling.
Shasha was the first to see her. She dived towards Sophia and pulled Gwendoline away and helped Sophia our of the water. Sophia was unconscious. Shasha felt for her pulse and breathing as everyone stood watching. Sophia had pulse but she wasn't breathing. Shasha wasted no time and performed CPR on Sophia. Sophia woke up with a gasp. The girls helped her to a nearby bench. Darrell looked at Gwendoline in anger in her eyes.
"You did it once before and you did it again," shouted Darrell. "You didn't learn your lesson, did you?"
Gwendoline began to cry.
"That's right! Cry! Cry all you want," said Alicia. "You must be mad to try and drown girls who are not very good at swimming. You aren't good yourself either."
Shasha aided Sophia and comforted her.
"I will take you to matron now," she helped the shivering Sophia up and took her to matron. Matron put her to bed with an electronic blanket.
"Her temperature is very low," said matron to Shasha. "She will be fine tomorrow but until then she should stay here."
The next day Shasha came to see her. She brought some Indian sweets that her mother had sent her.
"Hi Sophia! Are you better now? Here I brought you some Indian milk candy."
"Thanks, Shasha. I feel better now. Matron said that I will be okay tonight," said Sophia looking a little better. She had looked pale the day before. She took a bite out of the milk candy that Shasha brought her.
"This sweet is really tasty! Did your mother make them? How thoughtful of you to bring me this."
As she said that she began to cry. "Hey are you okay?" asked Shasha.
"Yes I am," said Sophia, sobbing. "It's just that no one has ever done this to me. I have no friends here as well as at my old school."
Shasha felt sorry for Sophia. "Well, you can be my friend," she said, holding Sophia's hand. "I haven't got a friend either."
Sophia looked at Shasha with tearful but happy and grateful eyes. "Really? You will? Oh thank you, Shasha's," she said. "First you saved my life and now you wanna be my friend?"
"Well it's no big deal that I saved you. I just performed CPR. It is easy but can save many lives. I learned it at the Red Cross society in my country," said Shasha. "But I wanna be your friend because even I myself don't have a friend here."
The next day Sophia came back to class she sat with Shasha and they got to know each other better.
