Darrell was lying on the grass, relaxing during break. Sally suddenly came running and joined her.
"Hey have you checked the notice board?" Sally asked suddenly. "You made it into the lacrosse team! You'll be playing against St Christopher next Thursday!"
"Swell!" Darrell said with a grin. "Do you want to have a practice match?"
"Sure," said Sally, getting up. "I'll go get the sticks, you get the ball."
"Alright," said Darrell and ran off to get the ball.
Soon, they were on the court, playing lacrosse. It was more of a practice round but they had fun.
Shasha and Sophia had been walking around there. They saw the two girls practicing and decided to watch them.
"Wooo go Darrell!" Shasha cheered. "You're gonna win next week!"
"Thanks, Shasha," said Darrell. "Wait how come you two don't play?"
"I'm not a sports person..." Shasha admitted with a sigh. "Not so good at it..."
"Oh come on," Darrell called. "Come on, you two! There are sticks in the storeroom behind you. Just grab two more."
"Wait me too?" Sophia asked. "But I can't play!"
"Oh come on," Sally urged. "Just give it a shot!"
"Yeah lets just try, Sophie," said Shasha. "Wait let me get the sticks."
She went to get the sticks and they both started playing with the rest. Soon, Alicia and Betty joined in too.
"Yes we can have a three on three," said Darrell. "Sally, join them."
Sally, rather sourly joined Alicia and Betty. They played, but she was soon rescued as Bill and Zerelda came too.
Sally gratefully reunited with Darrell. They were about to play but then two other girls came too. It was two of their classmates from another tower, Pat and Rita.
"Wait I think it'll be more fun if we had more players," said Pat. "We'll go and call the others. They're simply just dying of boredom!"
They ran off and brought their other classmates. Soon, there were twenty players on the field, ten on each team.
Even Gwendoline had joined in. She decided that she'll just keep score with Mavis since she had no idea how to play lacrosse.
"We have a full game now," said Darrell. "Bring on, sisters!"
They had a full match. Shasha and Sophia served as defenders with Zerelda while Sally was the goalkeeper. Darrell was an attacker and she played against the other team together with Bill, Alicia, Betty, Pat and Rita. They played a whole match together.
Darrell played a good game and her team scored two goals. But the opposing team was just as good. They had scored two goals too.
"Five minutes left for half-time," Gwendoline called.
Mavis got an idea and ran out of the field. Gwendoline was gonna call after her but she decided that she should take her responsibility as scorekeeper seriously for just this one time.
Mavis came back with a tray of lemon slices. Where she got them, no one knew.
She came in just in time for half-time.
"Mavis where on earth did you get these lemons?" Alicia asked in surprise, taking a slice of lemon. "Anyway, it's a good thing."
They ate the lemons and soon it was time to play again. Darrell played really well and really tired her opponent, who was a sporty girl from west tower.
They played and the score was 3-3. It was a tie again, but not for long. Darrell played and scored a goal. The winning goal. Her team won the match!
"Go Darrell!" Everyone shouted. "DARRELL! DARRELL! DARRELL!"
They left the field and Darrell's teammates all clapped her on her back, congratulating her. The opposing team did the same too.
"Good game," they said, giving their opponent a hi five.
What they didn't know was the games captain, Molly Ronaldson, was watching from a distance. She was immensely impressed with their game and felt sure that she had chosen the right person for the team.
Molly was late for class and ran off to her french prep with Mam'zelle Dupont.
"You know what's the sad thing about this match?" Darrel said. "There is no marvellous tea at the end of this game..."
"Yeah that true," said Sally. "That's okay."
"Hey I got an idea," said Alicia. "My grandma just sent me a box of snacks. Wanna have a midnight feast? With all of us, in the common room?"
"Alicia..." said Sally, disagreeing with her, but she instantly changed her mind. "You know what? Let's!"
"Yes do lets!" Darrell said, nodding in glee. "I have some stuff too!"
"I do too," said Zerelda. "My English grandma sent me some snacks too. She sent a nice, big bacon pie, some tinned fruit, Nesquick, cheese and crackers. Oh and a few bottles of ginger beer too."
"Splendid!" Betty said slyly. "Let's!"
"I feel like this is the first ever term that we ever had that we're having two midnight feasts!" Alicia in glee. "First Shasha's snacks, now potluck. Splendid!"
"Speaking of my snacks, I think my mom mentioned that she was gonna send me a box today. She said she cooked up some tasty stuff like a butter cake, and some cookies. She also mentioned cupcakes."
"The usual stuff..." said Betty. "Anything new like last time?"
"Yeah I think she mentioned that she was gonna give us some sweets too," said Shasha, remembering. "Yeah she made a batch of snacks and she's sending them out for us."
"Yummy..." everyone echoed.
"But the thing is, I don't know when it'll arrive," said Shasha. "Let's just hope it arrives today."
They hoped that it would and they went back to their common room. It was Saturday and the post office would close at seven like usual. It was six and the girls were dismayed as they were sure that the parcel would not arrive that day.
"This is a bummer..." said Darrell. "Oh well, at least we have Alicia's and Zerelda's. At least we have some stuff right?"
But she was wrong as that very minute, a first former came trotting in.
"Is Shasha here?" The first former asked. "Wait is it you? There's a parcel for you in the office. You too, Zerelda. Oh and Darrell too."
The three got up to go and get their parcels from the office. The three of them went in and the clerk gave them their parcels.
Shasha received two parcels, one enormous one, and one small one. The other two received a parcel identical to the smaller one that Shasha received.
"What's this?" Shasha asked while they were walking back to their common room. "The big one's from my mom, but this one?"
"I don't know any more than you do, buddy," Zerelda said with a shrug. "But it says here that it's from the police!"
"You two know anyone who's a bobby?" Darrell asked two which her two friends denied.
They went to the common room and opened the parcels. It was a police badge.
"Whoa..." Shasha said while examining it. "So cool!"
"Yeah it looks wunnerful," said Zerelda.
"Why did they send this to us?" Darrell said, digging inside the box it came in. "Girls, there's a letter in here."
They read the letter.
Dear Darrell,
They Police Department would like to thank you and your two friends for helping the Law in tracking down a group of criminals. They are apparently a group of notorious criminals who kidnap young girls to ask for large sums ransom from their parents. We have been trying to track them down for a long time but have failed to catch them because the past victims are always too late in contacting us, afraid that something might happen to their daughter.
So, as a token of gratitude, we reward you an 'I Am A Law Enforcer badge'.
Sincerely,
The Law Enforcement Officers of Cornwall
