The teen was on the verge of tears the whole way that Jonah showed him to the small coffee shop up the road. Jonah had been there many times before, heck he ever worked there at one point. He didn't try to talk to the boy on the way there because he knew how shook up he was probably feeling, instead, he kept one hand on Lila's pushchair and wrapped the other around the boy's waist.
"Have a seat, kid." He said before turning to face the toddler who he found asleep. Smiling, he put a blanket over the hood drowning her in darkness. He took a seat next to the boy who sat there bouncing his knee and looking around the cafe nervously. "hey hey hey," Jonah placed his hand on Zach's knee, stopping it from bouncing.
"I- I'm sorry, I-" The boy started but got interrupted by the older man.
"Darling, stop. you have nothing to be sorry about."
"But I-"
"no." Jonah started, reaching his hand to the teenager's chin and lifting his head. "The only thing that I need from you right now is your name, what drink you want and you to look after the baby whilst I place it," Jonah smiled, looking the sad boy in the eyes.
"I'm Zach," The boy who Jonah now knew the name of replied.
"Hi Zach, I'm Jonah. What would you like to drink?" The boy looked down and began playing with his fingers. "Zach buddy, what's up?"
"I don't have any money," He admits, sheepishly.
Jonah laughs, shaking his head. "Darling, even if you did I'd still pay for yours even if you did have money after what has just happened," The boy doesn't reply. "So, what do you want? I sense you're a chocolate milk lover," Jonah teased making the boy blush and nod. He sure did like chocolate milk, or any milkshake for that matter (except banana) "okay, I'll go order. Zach nodded, watching as Jonah stood up and walked to the counter.
He looked around the small cafe which he had never been to. The walls were a soft cream and the floor was wooden. People littered the tables but the shop wasn't too busy. a lot of the customers Zach suspected were older than 50 and only a few (apart from the small children) were younger. On the walls were pictures of the city and the opposite one held clocks with different time zones around the world.
"Here you go," Jonah passed the glass to Zach who muttered a 'thanks' under his breath. Noticing the sound of shuffling coming from the pushchair next to him, Jonah lifted the blanket to find his daughter awake.
"Dada?" The small girl said, fisting her eyes.
"Yes, bubba?"
"Why no zoo?"
"I'm sorry babe, we're not going today anymore." upon seeing the girl's sad eyes, Zach immediately felt guilty.
"Why not?" the toddler asked curiously.
"I have a special job for you," Jonah replied, undoing the straps of her pushchair and seating her on his lap. "This is Zach, say hi," The girl waved shyly to the stranger who waved back to the cute girl. "Can Lila be friends with Zach for daddy?"
the girl nodded furiously with a big grin on her face. "Yea dada Lila like fwiends,"
Zach liked friends too, It was just a shame that none of them saw the pain, his sad eyes or noticed the cuts that scattered his body. At least one person noticed him, even if it was a stranger, for once he had someone who at least made him feel like he mattered, even though, deep down he knew he was a burden on everyone because what good is a sightless soul?
No good at all.
